For years, “Game of Thrones” was hyped by fans as the best show in television history — but a new internet smear campaign aims to tear down the series’ lofty legacy.
During the HBO hit’s eight-season run, which culminated this past May, the buzzy show often topped Google searchers with questions about character origins and fan theories.
But Monday, much to series creators D.B. Weiss and David Beioff’s chagrin, “Game of Thrones” is still one of the most popularly occurring search results — this time for “bad writers.”
The effort began — as many viral internet campaigns do — on Reddit.
“Bad Writers. Upvote this post so it’s the first result when you google ‘Bad writers,’ ” the post reads, alongside a photo of Benioff and Weiss.
So the Reddit hive went to work. Now, if you search “bad writers” in Google’s search engine, the “GoT” writers appear.
HBO broke records with their viewership, especially in their last season, which was criticized by many fans as rushed and sloppy — evidenced by a stray coffee cup left squarely in the middle of a scene next to Daenerys Targaryen. The “GoT” crew flubbed again when fans spotted a water bottle by the feet of one of the actors during a critical final scene.
Nevertheless, Benioff and Weiss will use their “bad writing” chops to help develop a new “Star Wars” trilogy — as fans petition Walt Disney Studios to can the besmirched writers.
