Four teens risk lives to save woman stranded at sea after hearing cries for help

Four heroic teens risked their lives to save a woman stranded in the sea.

The friends were just "chilling" when they heard the distressed woman's pleas for help after she got into difficulty in the water off Crosby beach.

The young lads – aged 16 to 17 – called Liverpool Coastguard but decided they needed to act immediately after becoming increasingly concerned for the woman’s safety.

They used a bicycle lamp to help locate the woman in the pitch black on October 20 at around 8.30pm, reports the Liverpool Echo.

Two of the teenagers waded into the water and – with the assistance of the two others – managed to drag her ashore to safety, after which they helped coastguard volunteers carry the stretcher to a waiting ambulance.

The four friends – Owain Fletcher, 16, Harvey Williams, 16, Mikey Fraser, 17, and James Masterson, 16 – all knew each other from the time when they were pupils at St Michael’s High School in Crosby.

Mikey, one of those who waded into the water to help rescue the woman, said: "We were all just chilling and listening to music when we could hear someone shouting for help.

"We turned the music off and we heard it again.

"It was pitch black but James had his bicycle light and it was reflecting off her glasses.

"The tide was bringing her in so me and Harvey went into the water, which was up to our thighs, and dragged her to the shore as far as we could.

"She couldn’t stand and it took all four of us to get her to safety.

"I couldn’t watch a woman who needed help and not do something. It didn’t occur to us that we might be risking our own lives.

"We were always comfortable with what we were doing.

"The coastguard thanked us afterwards, but they're the ones who should be thanked because they’re all volunteers."

James, from Crosby, said: "We rang the coastguard station, but we decided to act because she couldn’t have kept her head above water much longer.

"She was propped up against the rock while we waited for the coastguard to come.

"The woman was put on a stretcher and we all helped carry it to a waiting ambulance.”

A statement from the Coastguard said: "The Coastguard would advise anyone not to put themselves at risk by entering the water and to wait for the emergency services to arrive, however, there is no doubt that the selfless actions of these young men were instrumental in saving this lady’s life.

"We would like to thank all of them for their brave actions."

Emergency services checked over the boys before a parent came to collect them.
