  • A British father slammed his child’s school after his son’s £35 gloves were stolen
  • He asked for assurance the school would replace his son’s coat if it went missing
  • Many Netmums users argued children shouldn’t bring expensive items to school
  • Others suggested the child may have lost his gloves rather than had them stolen

A father who threatened to call the police after his son’s gloves were stolen from school has been labelled a ‘moron’ by incredulous parents on Netmums.

Writing anonymously on the parenting forum, a British woman known only as Miranda told how she overheard a father at her daughter’s secondary school threaten to involve the police if the school didn’t find the missing £35 gloves.

Many users slammed the father for sending his son to school with such expensive items and argued it was not the school’s responsibility to replace every item that went missing.

Others suggested the youngster may have simply lost his gloves and claimed that they were stolen to avoid getting into trouble.

The user outlined in her post that her own daughter had experienced theft at the school, she told how the father demanded assurance from the school to replace stolen items

Writing under the handle ‘Miranda E’, the mother asked others for their thoughts on sending their children to school with expensive possessions.

One person replied: ‘Firstly, I wouldn’t send my child to school with clothes that cost a ridiculous amount of money, but obviously there’s peer pressure to wear certain brands so in a way I can understand it.

‘Secondly, if my child had had something stolen, be it gloves costing £1 or £35, it’s theft. I’d expect the school to talk to the pupils about the seriousness of it and the consequences, perhaps check any CCTV, and discipline any child involved.

‘I wouldn’t expect the school to replace any items, but I would certainly expect them to investigate it. I’d be more polite though, and wouldn’t go in ranting and raving.’

A flood of responses to the thread slammed the father for sending his son to school in expensive items and said all theft should be treated the same regardless of the value of items

Another added: ‘Lol! If he can’t afford to replace them, then he shouldn’t have sent them into school. The value of the items shouldn’t matter, if another child had their £1 gloves stolen it’s still theft and should be treated the same.

‘He seems to think that because he’s spent more money that he’s of more importance. I don’t think so. He should be annoyed at his son for not taking better care of them, not the school.’

A flood of responses to the thread argued the gloves were most likely lost rather than stolen and the son should take responsibility.

A user speaking under the handle ‘Debbie W’ claimed children always say things have been stolen to avoid getting in trouble.

Others accused the son of losing his gloves and claiming they were stolen to avoid getting in trouble with his father

She wrote: ‘Kids always say things are ‘stolen’ when they’ve lost them. ‘Stolen’ gets you sympathy. ‘Lost’ gets you into trouble! And let’s face it, kids lose things all the time. And their parents have to buy new ones. End of.

‘Besides, even if the police were called, how on earth would they investigate? The very best they or the school could do would be to lecture all the kids on not stealing.

‘Even if a crime did take place they’d never be able to get to the bottom of it. They’d just issue Daddy with a crime number for his gloves and that would be the end of it.’

Another added: ‘I don’t buy it for ONE second! LOL that sounds like something he’s told daddy to keep daddy from shouting at him.’
