Extinction Rebellion protesters ‘marry’ on Westminster Bridge during demo

This is the moment a couple appear to get married on Westminster Bridge during a huge Extinction Rebellion demonstration.

The pair, who are believed to have been protesting, were snapped in an embrace on an action site demonstrators dubbed The Beacon, one of 12 places around key government locations targeted today.

While Westminster Bridge doesn't hold licences to host weddings, witnesses said they couple hitched there – after parts of the capital came to a standstill .

The couple, who have not been named, were cheered on by other protesters and some threw what appeared to be pink flowers.

Others enjoyed an impromptu cricket game outside the Supreme Court as the streets rang with drumming, whistles and chanting. Dozens of tents were erected on the roads and yoga classes took place on Westminster Bridge.

But Boris Johnson has urged police to "use the full force of the law" to deal with climate change protesters.

Metropolitan Police said 217 people were arrested in relation to the protests.

Celebrities joined in, including actress Juliet Stevenson, comedian and author Ruby Wax and model Daisy Lowe.

Sir Mark Rylance, who won a BAFTA for his role in Bridge of Spiers in 2015, said: "People have been saying to me, it doesn't make a difference having a celebrity joining the protests.

"But I want people to know climate change protesters aren't hippies. I am confident these protests are going to lead to a solid change."

Stevenson said she was delighted to see so much engagement from young people and that her own son was at the protests and working for Extinction Rebellion.

The Truly Madly Deeply star said: "It's a very wonderful action today. We can't any longer allow governments to do this so we have to make it clear that there is no more time.
