Don't batter your balance to enjoy National Fried Chicken Day with these clucky tips

OH my bird, it’s National Fried Chicken Day!

Today celebrates the takeaway favourite and I’m up for some tasty grub with the Euro 2020 semi-finals tonight and, of course, the big one tomorrow.

You don’t need to batter your bank balance to enjoy the much-loved dish. And there is no need to wing it, thanks to my clucky tips . . .

D.I.Y. FRY: If you are up for doing your own, you can get a simple fried-chicken fix that is healthier than deep-fried options with just three simple ingredients.

All you need is deboned chicken thighs (fattier thigh meat works better for this) with the skin on, sea salt and ground black pepper.

Simply evenly salt both sides of your chicken before placing each piece skin side-down in the pan and cooking for around 15 minutes (you will know it’s ready when the skin comes away easily from the pan surface).

Once it stops sticking and is nice and brown, it is ready to be flipped. Turn the chicken and cook for another five minutes, until golden-brown. Remove from the pan and season with plenty of black pepper. Easy.

WAFFLING ON: Go big on your fakeaway fried-chicken dinner with new Fully Loaded Fried Chicken & Waffle Fries, £3 at Iceland . . . or grab two lots for a fiver and save money on a crowd-pleasing spread.

SAVING: £1 when buying two packs

WING OR LOSE: If you would rather pick up your chicken at the store, I am a big fan of Asda’s Takeaway Southern Fried Chicken Wings, £2.

They are perfect for a night in and a quid cheaper than buying the SFC Southern Fried Chicken Wings takeaway box from Sainsbury’s, which will cost £3.
