Diane Guerrero Says This Book Makes Her Feel Like She Can Do Anything

Diane Guerrero has been awake since 5:30 a.m. when we talk. The actor is doing a satellite media tour for the second season of the live-action DC Universe series Doom Patrol, but she jokes it might as well be renamed Zoom Patrol during this socially distant time. “I was like, What is this strange feeling?” she says of the early call time. “And then I was like, Oh, it’s just waking up early, Diane; you’ll survive.”

The name Zoom Patrol does fit. The HBO Max series about DC’s strangest group of heroes jumps—or zooms—all over the place in the “wild, unlikely world we live in,” as Guerrero calls it. This season will find her character, Jane, still struggling with finding out that Niles Caulder, a doctor who took in Jane and the other members of the Doom Patrol, isn’t who he said he was. On top of that, every character is dealing with very real issues like mental illness and post-traumatic stress disorder.

For Guerrero, taking care of her mental health on set was especially important because she plays a character with 64 different personalities, each with their own super power. “The first season I was really excited to take on all these different emotions, but it affected me because I hadn’t dealt with personal issues,” she says. But playing Jane, Guerrero says, inspired her to work those out in therapy. “Since I was in college, I sought out therapy,” she explains, “but because my character is so affected by trauma, I decided to look into some of my own stuff that I really needed to unpack.”

One of the things she learned: to let the character go at the end of each work day. “It induced so much within me,” she says. "I’ve been getting a lot better at that.”

So for Glamour’s latest installment of Your Fave’s Faves, Guerrero opens up about the importance of a morning routine and more of her self-care rituals. Take notes.

I put olive oil, salt, pepper, a little paprika to have a little spice, and a little bit of apple cider vinegar to give it a bit of a tangy flavor. I make it with couscous or rice, and then grab the vegetables from the fridge and put them in a stir-fry. You can have a meal for two days.

I have hot water and lemon every morning before I eat anything. I drink that so my stomach settles and because it’s good for your digestion. Plus, the lemon gives me an energy boost that I can’t get from coffee. It’s part of my morning ritual, and rituals are really good to balance stress and anxiety. This one really helps me a lot.

I really, really love All About Love by bell hooks. It’s teaching me a lot of what is missing in our society, which is love. Love is usually the biggest quest in most stories, but usually we don’t honor that. It goes through different aspects of love—love ethics, love for yourself, love for your community—so I’ve been enjoying it. The other book is from the Pocket Change Collective Series, and it’s called Beyond the Gender Binary by Alok Vaid-Menon. I understand we’re not living in a binary world, and there are so many people out there that need our support and understanding. So that has been very, very helpful. And the other one I love is called Rising Strong by Brené Brown. She talks about understanding the power in your resilience. As long as you get up, you have enough strength and experience to go through another day. It’s made me feel like I can do anything.

I have a stuffed-animal owl that my partner won for me at the Santa Monica Pier! Every time I look at it, it makes me happy. I use it as a pillow and something to squeeze when I want to get cozy in bed and watch TV. I like to curl up with that owl.

Instagram. I’m constantly on it because all of my friends are posting information and sharing education, and I’m really enjoying it now for that. Until recently I wasn’t enjoying going on social media as much because of the capitalist nature of it all and these kind of false notions of beauty and standards. I didn’t want to be part of that anymore, so I’m really happy Instagram is being used for good and for sharing information and to connect with what’s important.

I have a journal that I keep by my nightstand because sometimes I have really intense dreams and I like to write them down. The cover is full of hearts, so it lets me know that I’m safe and can be vulnerable. I have tons of notebooks just for regular stuff, which I’ve been doing a lot of lately. I used to get a ton of notebooks and stationery at Papyrus, but I also suggest buying from Black-owned businesses and bookstores. I also love writing with gel pens because they write easily, look beautiful, and I can use different colors depending on what I’m talking about. I also like sticky notes because I can put them all over my mirror. There's so many of them stuck to my mirror right now that soon I won’t be able to look at myself!

I love a puffy sleeve. Depending on the mood, it can be very demure or very powerful. The one I’m wearing a lot right now is from ASTR The Label, but I’m looking forward to buying more second-hand and vintage these days. I also just bought this amazing oversized silk and cashmere floral scarf with a digital printed image of beadwork by Jaime Okuma, a Native American designer. I’m wearing the scarf like a cape because it makes me feel powerful. Jamie’s work is beautiful, and her one-of-a-kind beadwork pieces are hand-executed exclusively by her. I have been wanting to get closer to designers that I’ve never heard of before and certainly ones that don’t get enough attention, so I hope to purchase more.

I also like Pyer Moss for their incomparable style and message. I’m especially inspired by their director, Kerby Jean-Raymond, whose vision is transformative. He is changing the world with his art and voice.

EltaMD Skincare UV Clear Broad-Spectrum SPF 46. It’s the most important product I own. I know that the sun often harms skin, so I always try to wear sunscreen. I own so many sunscreens, but this is the one I use the most.

I really like the Glossier products. They’re so simple, especially right now when you’re wearing light makeup for Zoom calls and don’t need heavy makeup. I love its Futuredew Oil Serum Hybrid, Boy Brow Grooming Pomade, and Haloscope Dew Effect Highlighter. Also, they have committed to doing anti-racist work in support of Black Lives Matter and are donating a million dollars in this effort. I also really like Mented Cosmetics. Their makeup is well-pigmented, and I love their Red Matte Lipstick.

Albanese Sour Gummies, either that or ice cream with chocolate cookies inside. You just crumble up the cookies and mix them in your ice cream, and it’s like a McFlurry.

Ramy season two, which I truly, truly enjoyed. I loved season one, and season two was so beautiful. I want shows that ask questions, and this show definitely does that. I love that it’s not just about Ramy; they go deep into the other characters as well. I love the different perspectives based on everyone’s personal experience. It’s really informative and eye-opening.

Sally is an 80-pound black lab, and all she wants are treats from Just Food for Dogs. It’s really helped her out because she’s almost 10 and it’s rejuvenated her in a way that I’ve never seen before in a dog. That food has really turned her life around. Penny, my other dog, is three and a half pounds, and she likes toys, especially this Chew-nel shoe—a play on Chanel—that she loves.
