BBC viewers were left very uncomfortable after witnessing a semi-naked Louis Theroux joining in a ‘sensual’ dinner party for his latest documentary exploring the world of polyamory.

The documentary maker stripped to his underwear, was smeared in whipped cream and ate strawberries served by topless women in the first episode of his Altered States series, which aired on Sunday night.

The show, entitled ‘Love Without Limits’, saw the 48-year-old father-of-three admit that he had asked his wife’s permission before he took part in a blindfolded ‘sensual’ dinner in Portland, Oregon.

Some viewers said the racy scenes had ‘gone too far’ as others complained that it made them ‘cringe’ with embarrassment for the broadcaster – who they insisted must have a very understanding wife.

As part of his new BBC documentary series Altered States, Louis Theroux took part in a blindfolded sensual eating dinner which he had to seek permission from his wife before he could join in

BBC viewers watching the racy scenes said they made them ‘cringe’ with one even saying he had ‘gone too far’ during making the thought-provoking documentary about polyamory

‘So wrong. Made me cringe. His wife must be an angel #gonetoofar,’ said one.

‘The sensual eating is truly toe curling cringe,’ added another.

One person joked it was so uncomfortable to watch they were close to vomiting: ‘Really enjoyed last nights show although did have me conflicted and I even dry heaved a couple of times! It made for uncomfortable viewing.’

The saucy scenes showed the broadcaster, who has three sons with film director Nancy Strang, join the group Sex Positive Portland, which celebrates non-monogamous relationships – and before long he was watching attendees at the dinner ‘spasming’ in ecstasy.

Louis said he felt like he needed to ‘throw himself in’ to the dinner and prove that he was as ‘committed’ as everyone else was, but was later seen admitting activities had gone much further than he thought they would.

Louis played the part of the ‘giver’ for the first portion of the evening, feeding people and stroking them before it was his turn to become the ‘taker’ and removing his clothes

He was fed strawberries and other food by topless women while he was blindfolded for the programme about polyamory in Portland, Oregon joining the group Sex Positive Portland for an evening event

He previously told the Sun: ‘There were people kind of spasming in ecstasy. There was a lot of nipple tweaking and one woman went round squirting whipped cream on her breasts and feeding the whipped cream to various people.’

He added: ‘That was one of those images you’ll have in your head for ever.’

In the documentary, Louis confessed to his fellow attendees, in a pre-dinner drink before shedding his clothes, that he was nervous and had never been fed food before by strangers.

The leader of the group gently talked through the night with people put in pairs, one the ‘giver’ and one the blindfolded ‘taker’.

The new couples were then encouraged to eat and feed each other with any part of their body.

At the beginning of the evening Louis said he felt ‘nervous’ about taking part but then decided that he had to ‘throw himself’ into it

Louis took part in the evening where he was a ‘giver’ and a ‘taker’, which saw him remove most of his clothes and fed strawberries and cream by topless women and other men

Louis commented: ‘Advertised as sensual eating it soon became clear that the eating was taking a back seat to the sensual.’

Still clothed, the broadcaster got involved rubbing another man’s back and shoulders while he was being fed by another man and woman.

The film-maker started as a ‘giver’ for the first portion of the evening and then became a ‘taker’.

Removing all his clothes – apart from his boxers – Louis was then blindfolded and sat down on the floor while being fed by a topless women in a skimpy black thong.

While he was being fed by multiple people, there were moans and groans in the background from other people enjoying their dinner.

He said: ‘It was all rather embarrassing, but at the same time a little bit liberating.

‘For a moment the idea of a world in which the currency of sex and love was more free-flowing made a tiny bit of sense.’

The broadcaster travelled to Portland, Oregon, which is seen as the US capital of polyamory and ethical non-monogamy, which is the practice of ‘openly and transparently having multiple relationships that go further than just sex’

Louis previously appeared on the BBC’s The One Show where he spoke about the episode which filmed in Portland, Oregon, the heart of the polyamory movement, seeking to re-write the rulebook on how we conduct intimate relationships and experience family life.

Portland, whose city motto is ‘Keep Portland Weird’, is seen as the US capital of polyamory and ethical non-monogamy, the practice of openly and transparently having multiple relationships that go further than just sex.

He said: ‘I really do try to go into these things and keep and open mind.

‘As flawed as polyamory clearly is, there is an in-built problem with it, which is jealousy. It’s not as though monogamy is perfect.

‘I think I will be sticking with monogamy, yes.’

Louis also engaged with families who have made the bold decision to open up their relationships in a number of different ways including inviting other partners into the family home

Louis also embedded himself with families who have made the bold decision to open up their relationships in a number of different ways; whether inviting others into existing relationships or allowing partners to seek romance elsewhere.

He discovers that for many, more partners means more love and more happiness. But for others, multiple-relationships have led to jealousy, upset and broken-hearts.
