Creepy station abandoned for 20 years is being turned into a haunted house

An empty train station can make for a pretty creepy setting.

Throw in the fact that it’s been disused since the 1980s and currently surrounded by barbed wire fences, and suddenly it’s easy to see why Michigan Central Station is being transformed into a haunted house this Halloween.

The derelict train station in Detroit has long been subject to vandalism – in fact it’s made for for a decrepit backdrop to a host of films including Eminem’s 8 Mile,Transformers and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

But now the 105-year-old building is set to get a Halloween makeover after the Ford Motor Company, who bought the property earlier this year, are set to transform its first floor into a terrifying haunted house.

According to local publication Crains Detroit , Ford revealed its plans to create the spooky pop-up during a local community meeting, although it has yet to be confirmed whether the event will take place on Halloween itself (which falls on a Wednesday this year) or if it will be held the weekend before.

The event will be free of charge and priority will be given to local residents, as the company prepares to breathe a new lease of life into the iconic landmark.

Of course Detroit is quite far to go just for a haunted house – but if you are after a scare then there are plenty of Halloween events across the UK to check out, or of course you could really put your bravery to the test at one of the UK theme park’s Halloween scare mazes.

But if you are in Motor City then it could make for a pretty memorable trip.

Until Ford purchased Michigan Central Station and threw a community celebration in June, the building had been abandoned since 1988, after the last Amtrak train pulled out of its station.

Shortly after that, the building fell into a dilapidated state and soon became hailed as an iconic symbol of Detroit’s deteriorating economy.

It suffered from vandalism, not to mention a host of its features were stolen – including the main station clock!

(Although after Ford purchased the building, the clock was returned anonymously to authorities, while other missing parts have also been re-acquired.)
