Coalition MPs urge government to fast-track foreign workers into Australia

Coalition members of a parliamentary committee have urged the government to let skilled migrants into the country ahead of Australians stranded overseas to solve an urgent shortage of qualified workers hampering businesses.

A parliamentary report from the federal joint committee on migration urges the Morrison government to weaken rules requiring firms to employ Australians before seeking workers from overseas to fill a position.

“Australia needs to replace the skilled migrants that left our shores as a result of the pandemic,” the committee, chaired by Liberal MP Julian Leeser, said. “Without the return of skilled migration, Australia’s economic recovery will be severely hampered and it will be harder to create more jobs for Australians.”

Among its recommendations is for the government to “reserve places on flights and in quarantine for skilled migrants”.

More to come.
