Celebrity jeweler Kyle Chan doesn’t think engagement ring budgets are important

If you want to buy an engagement ring like your favorite stars, don’t worry about the price tag.

Celebrity jeweler Kyle Chan, 43, told Page Six recently that his proposal-ready clients are more relaxed when it comes to their budgets as “jewelry doesn’t depreciate as much as buying a car or a piece of clothing or a purse.”

The man behind Jax Taylor and Brittany Cartwright’s ring explained that he helps prospective buyers throughout the ring buying process by helping them manage their expectation of the size of the diamond within their monetary constraints.

“I would always suggest people to go for some timeless pieces,” he said. “You could do antique style or you can do more modern but still keep it really simple and cheap because an engagement ring is a ring that you wear every day for at least 10,15 years before you want to upgrade.”

“So if they are set on having a two carat and you have a certain budget, you might want to consider either [going for] a slightly lower clarity but keep the color very nice and clean because that’s the first thing you’ll see. You will see the color of the diamond, you see the shape of the diamond and you’ll see the size of the diamond over the little inclusion which is like the imperfection of the diamond. So you should try to concentrate on the on the color and the size first.”

As for the most common faux pas that he sees?

“Do not over-design the engagement ring,” he said. “Some people are very creative and want a lot of curves, lines or complicated structures, flowery designs with hearts and all of [that] stuff. You might want to avoid it or tone it down.”

Instead, he suggests putting gemstones or birthstones inside the band to have a hidden message.
