Celebrities often opt for a unique moniker when it comes to naming their children.

While some of the baby names veer on the side of refreshingly unconventional, others have left fans scratching their heads.

Some of the more unusual choices include Kylie Jenner who finally unveiled her son’s name as Aire, while Elon Musk and ex-partner Grimes hit headlines after calling their son X AE A-XII, which he later changed to X.

They then welcomed their first daughter, Exa Dark Sideræl Musk in 2021, and also changed her name to Y.

Elsewhere, Cheryl and Liam Payne named their son – who is now five years old – Bear, while model Lara Bingle and her partner Sam Worthington have kept with showbiz tradition by giving their child the unusual moniker, Rocket Zot.

Siblings X and Y

Grimes and the Tesla CEO Elon musk had previously announced their newborn’s name was X Æ A-12 however they later shortened his name to X and later welcomed their first daughter, Exa Dark Sideræl Musk, whose name they later shortened to Y

Grimes referred to Musk as her ‘boyfriend’ in a Vanity Fair interview, but after the interview was published, she took to Twitter to reveal that they had since broken up

In June 2020, Grimes and Elon Musk officially named their son X AE A-XII Musk on his birth certificate – after the eccentric couple had to slightly adapt their firstborn’s moniker to comply with California law.

The Canadian singer – real name Claire Elise Boucher – and the Tesla CEO had previously announced their newborn’s name was X Æ A-12.

But birth names in California must only contain letters from the English alphabet, with no numbers or special characters, TMZ reported at the time.

The parents therefore had to change the character Æ, which is used in Norwegian and Danish and is often pronounced ‘Ash’, to ‘AE’ in their son’s name.

The final part of his unusual name, A-12, named after a 1960s spy plane, was changed to Roman numerals to comply with state law. Their son’s nickname is X.

Grimes and Elon Musk broke up in September 2021. They later welcomed their first daughter, Exa Dark Sideræl Musk, via surrogate in December 2021.

Grimes referred to Musk as her ‘boyfriend’ in a Vanity Fair interview, but after the interview was published, she took to Twitter to reveal that they had since broken up.

‘Me and E have broken up *again* since the writing of this article,’ she wrote on March 10. ‘But he’s my best friend and the love of my life.’

The off-again, on-again duo is now calling their daughter Y, having given a new moniker to the tot when she was 15-months-old.

Grimes wrote on Twitter in March: ‘She’s Y now, or ‘Why?’ or just ‘?’ (But the government won’t recognize that),’ Grimes tweeted. ‘Curiosity, the eternal question… and such.’

Grimes also elaborated on the meaning of Exa Dark Sideræl at the time. Exa is a reference to exaFLOPS, a supercomputing term for the capability to perform a quintillion floating-point operations per second, Grimes told Vanity Fair.

Dark is a reference to ‘the unknown’ and to the ‘beautiful mystery’ of dark matter, she said. And Sideræl — pronounced ‘sigh-deer-ee-el’ — is ‘a more elven’ spelling of sidereal, ‘the true time of the universe, star time, deep space time, not our relative earth time,’ she explained.

Aire

Kylie Jenner finally revealed her son’s unique name by sharing a picture of the then 11-month-old for the first time on Instagram, while revealing his name is Aire

The 25-year-old cosmetics mogul also shared pictures of her 11-month-old son’s face for the first time on Instagram, while revealing his name is Aire. She then shared that the unique moniker is pronounced ‘air’.

The reality star finally unveiled his name ahead of his first birthday on February 2 and just two weeks after she reportedly split from 31-year-old rapper Travis Scott – with whom she also shares four-year-old daughter Stormi.

After the mother-of-two announced the name, a fan account shared photos of Aire from Kylie’s post and prompted the question: ‘Do you think it’s pronounced air or airey?’

To answer the question and clarify, Kylie commented ‘AIR’ alongside a red heart emoji.

Almost a year after his birth, The Kardashians star uploaded an Instagram photo series and penned the simple caption, ‘Aire,’ to announce to her 378 million followers her son’s new name.

The first snap that she shared was an adorable mirror selfie she had taken as she held her Aire in her arms. She then shared a cute photo of her son sitting comfortably on a cream-colored couch.

Model Lara Bingle and her partner Sam Worthington have kept with showbiz tradition by giving their baby boy the unusual moniker, Rocket Zot Worthington.

People may have raised their eyebrows when they heard the tiny tot’s unique name, but it is thought Lara and Sam chose Rocket because they liked the ring it had to it, according to People.

And they aren’t the only parents to give their bub the forename Rocket as Pharrell Williams and his wife Helen Lasichanh have also named their six-year-old son it too.

However, it’s baby Bingle’s rumoured middle name that had people gossiping across social media.

Despite the unusualness of it, the couple decided to use Zot as the second given name in tribute to Sam’s father Ronald W. Worthington, who uses the bizarre moniker as a nickname.

Meanwhile, according to Urban Dictionary, Zot can be an expression of enthusiasm used by athletes – particularly high mountain – when an action is completed with an excellent technique.

Zot can also be used as a cry at a sports event by a team to encourage their fellow players and in Albania it can mean power in reference to a leader, boss, Lord, God and headman.
