A British woman studying abroad was given an unexpected surprise when club organisers paid for her return trip to the UK  – so she could attend her favourite night out with them.

Philippa Hood, 20, from Newcastle upon Tyne, jokingly appealed for help online to fund her flights back to Nottingham University for a student event dubbed the ‘Crisis Extended Hours’ night on October 2.

The third-year student, who has moved to Barcelona for six months as part of a placement year, had already booked tickets for the occasion but balked at the potential £310 it would cost for flights.

Using the hashtag ‘GetPhillyToCRISIS’, the French and Spanish student asked for donations on Twitter – only for nightclub chiefs to stump up the cash.

Organisers said they didn’t want ‘distance getting in the way of a girl and the night she loves’ – and tweeted her with flight and train details from Barcelona to London Luton Airport.

An hour and a half later, Crisis staff confirmed on Twitter that they had purchased a return flight to Luton airport and train ticket up to Nottingham at a cheaper cost of £184.

Phillippa will now be going along to the event with a big group including her boyfriend and two best friends.

She said: ‘I’m still in shock really, it’s only a few days away but I can’t actually believe that I’m going, it’s mad.

Phillippa wrote on Twitter: ‘Got @ilove_CRISIS tickets for next week, anyone fancy paying the possible £350 for flights home so I can attend?’

‘They have really sorted me out. It’s very nice of them and I never actually thought they would do. It was a joke at the start.

‘I’m very excited to see everyone again. I can’t wait to boogie the night away with my besties. Me and my friend used to go every week last year.

‘We would try and go every Wednesday if we could unless there was something really important on. I don’t think we missed many if any, I even went during my exams.

Phillippa added: ‘The music is really good, it’s a mix of current and cheesy which is perfect. You get to see everyone because everyone from Uni is always there and you bump into everyone you know.’

Her flight back to Barcelona is the following day after the event at Rock City October 3 and she says ‘with a hangover it is going to be interesting’.

She is spending the first six months of her placement year in Spain before moving to France, and has aspirations of becoming a translator after finishing her degree.

Crisis is the University of Nottingham’s official student night in the city that sees more than 2,000 attendees every Wednesday.

The event Philippa wanted to travel to is an extended club night that runs until 5am at Rock City in Talbot Street and online tickets have already sold out.

Alex Galinkski, marketing and events coordinator for Crisis, said: ‘We received a tweet from Philippa about wanting someone to pay for flight tickets so she can attend Crisis next week.

‘We replied immediately and reached out for help from our followers. Philippa and her friends started using the hashtag and were re-tweeting it so it suddenly gained a bit of momentum.

‘A conversation with myself and the director started and we spontaneously decided to go ahead and look at prices to get her to Nottingham.

‘After tweeting her again we asked her to say the word and we will book the tickets. It was purely a bit of fun and something spontaneous that fits our brand ethos. We didn’t want distance getting in the way of a girl and the night she loves.’
