'Bridgerton' Star Nicola Coughlan Had Some Words for Critics of the Show's Diversity

Netflix's soapy period drama Bridgerton has everyone talking (about sex). But discourse surrounding the Shonda Rhimes hit isn't exclusive to what happens beneath the sheets (or halfway down a flight of stairs … ). Critics have also pointed to the show's "historical inaccuracy," as its set in a Regency London that actually allows non-white people in its highest echelons. "Historical inaccuracy" seems like a small price to pay in order to create an inclusive piece of art, but go off …

Anyway, one of the series's stars, Nicola Coughlan, who plays Penelope Featherington on the show, addressed naysayers on Twitter with some straight F-A-C-T-S.

Nicola Coughlan - Bridgerton

"You know the way some people were like 'Diversity in period drama doesn't work'….63 million households thought it did tho so," Coughlan tweeted alongside a post from Netflix Queue revealing that the show (as of Jan. 4) was the platform's "fifth-biggest original series launched to date."

"Remember people were trying to downvote the show on IMDB cos it was so diverse?" Coughlan continued, "You can't downvote us being Netflix fifth-biggest original release ever."

Damn straight.
