Bodyguard fans speculating on theories ahead of Sunday night’s finale have come up with a new possible twist to the tale – that the mysterious Richard Longcross is Vicky Budd’s secret boyfriend.

PC David Budd’s estranged wife Vicky has mentioned a new boyfriend in previous episodes, but his identity remains a mystery prompting viewers to speculate that he could be Longcross.

He’s been seen on screen visiting Julia’s hotel room to deliver a dossier of incriminating information on the Prime Minister, and speaking to MI5’s Director-General Stephen Hunter-Dunn about her secret trip to Chequers.

And he’s been stalking PC Budd after realising that he’s getting closer to the secret behind the bombing, which killed the Home Secretary.

Now viewers are convinced he’s linked to Vicky, with some pointing out that she became flustered when she saw a picture of Longcross.

The much-anticipated finale of hit drama Bodyguard airs on Sunday night and fan theories have been rife that the Home Secretary isn’t actually dead, especially as viewers weren’t shown her demise on screen.

Creator Jed Mercurio, who is the brains behind the cleverly written script, appeared via live link on ITV’s This Morning from the Belfast this week and appeared to drop a hint that their theory could be correct.

PC David Budd is desperately trying to find the perpetrators behind a bombing that killed Home Secretary Julia Montague who he was protecting and also romantically involved with

Home Secretary Julia Montague, played by Kelley Hawes, was killed when a bomb went off under the stage as she gave a speech, but fans are convinced her character isn’t really dead

Deftly avoiding Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby’s probing questions about what viewers could expect in the conclusion, Jed dropped a big hint about the social media conspiracy theories.

Asked about speculation that Julia’s name refers to Shakespearean character Juliet and whether the Home Secretary will really be alive after the fateful explosion and her death was all a ruse, he alluded to an ‘occasional grain of truth’.

‘It’s great people have theories and actually I do look at some of the bigger theories and it’s interesting there is occasionally there is a grain of truth.

Bodyguard creator Jed Mercurio deftly avoided revealing any major spoilers about Sunday’s hotly anticipated finale but did drop a hint about a ‘grain of truth’ in fan theories

During the third episode, Keeley’s character was giving a speech about her controversial RIPA-18 bill at St Matthews’ College when a bomb went off, sending her flying through the air

‘But it’s not like were standing by saying “hotter or colder” when people put forward their theories,’ he told the presenting duo.

Jed refused to confirm Julia was definitely dead but also avoided Phillip’s further questions about a previous comment saying Keeley’s character wasn’t coming back.

‘That’s the thing if you’re a drama writer you always have to tell the truth there is no element of fiction in it Phillip,’ he smirked.
