Australia to feature in new David Attenborough series

A new documentary series from naturalist Sir David Attenborough has begun production in Australia.

At least 30 per cent of the series, Life in Colour, will be shot in various locations throughout Australia. The series is a joint venture between Australia and the United Kingdom and will explore the way animals use colour to communicate. It is expected to air in 2021.

Life in Colour will air on the Nine Network in Australia as part of its worldwide premiere and will thereafter be available on Nine's streaming service Stan. The documentary will screen on the BBC in the United Kingdom. Life in Colour will be available on Netflix for viewers outside of Australia and the UK.

The production has received financial support from the federal government via Screen Australia. While Attenborough and his crew will film all over the world, Australian locations will include areas around Sydney and Thredbo in New South Wales, Lizard Island and Channel Country in Queensland, and Adelaide River in the Northern Territory.

Screen Australia's head of documentaries, Bernadine Lim, says Life in Colour will "leave an enduring legacy" for Australia's national identity. The show's creative team will include Australian-based documentarians Colette Beaudry and Adam Geiger – the pair behind the award-winning ABC documentary Can We Save the Reef?

The announcement that Life in Colour has started production comes just days after Attenborough criticised the Australian government for its position on climate change action. In an interview with the ABC, man widely regarded as the world's most famous wildlife filmmaker said Australia is home to an "extraordinary" section of the planet and urged politicians: "What you say, what you do, really, really matters."

Life in Colour is far from Attenborough's first documentary to focus extensively on Australia's landscape and wildlife. The British naturalist first visited Australia's Great Barrier Reef in 1957 and has long called for its protection.

Attenborough returned to Australia in the 1960s to film documentaries on Australian birds, insects and reptiles. His most recent projects in Australia have included Blue Planet II and the 2019 series Seven Worlds, One Planet – the latter featuring music from Australian pop star Sia.
