Art exhibit will play ‘Africa’ by Toto in Africa forever

Toto’s “Africa” is one of the most streamed songs in the world. Now, you can listen to it on repeat at the world’s oldest desert.

Max Siedentopf, an artist from Namibia, recently set up a solar-powered sound installation in Namib Desert that plays the 1982 hit on repeat. He told the BBC that the solar batteries will keep the song going forever.

“[I] wanted to pay the song the ultimate homage and physically exhibit ‘Africa’ in Africa,” Siedentopf, 27, told the BBC. “Some [Namibians] love it and some say it’s probably the worst sound installation ever. I think that’s a great compliment.”

His installation features six speakers that are wired to an MP3 file of the track.

“Most parts of the installation were chosen to be as durable as possible, but I’m sure the harsh environment of the desert will devour the installation eventually,” he said.

And while he placed his art in an undisclosed area in the 55-million-year-old desert, he hopes “Africa” plays for another 55 million years.
