Aldi's massive £80 six litre bottle of Prosecco goes on sale this week

The bottle contains the equivalent of eight normal-sized bottles of Prosecco.

That works out at 64 glasses of fizz for you and your loved ones.

The Methuselah Prosecco is pale straw in colour with aromas of fresh citrus fruits and wisteria flower.

On the palate, the wine has a refreshing acidity and soft sherbet taste.

It contains just 58 calories per glass, so it's lighter than standard Prosecco which typically contains about 80.

Eight easy ways to cut your booze costs

  • 1. Be aware of marketing tricks: Remember a supermarket’s job is to make us spend. So don’t be hoodwinked by stores’ marketing tricks, such as hiding bargain products on the bottom shelf and using sales-type signage for non-sale items.
  • 2. Drop one brand level as you shop:  Premium to branded, branded to regular, regular to value. Doing this on everything you buy could save some an estimated 30 per cent off their bill.
  • 3. Don't be a supermarket snob: Aldi and Lidl have decent wine at really good prices. Have some fun with this and do a blind taste test.
  • 4. Be wary of duty free: You might think you’re getting a bargain when you buy duty free but you may find cheaper elsewhere.
  • 5. Buy in bulk: Buying wine in cases will often give you the best value for your money. Look out for deals in supermarkets which give you 25 per cent off when buying six bottles.
  • 6. Download the wine app Vivino: You can take a photo of any wine label and it will compare prices for you.
  • 7. Sign up to an online wine club: Signing up to online wine clubs, such as Virgin Wines, will mean you earn rewards and get great deals – but beware of rip-offs too.
  • 8. Buy with friends: If you like a bargain but don’t want to splash out too much, consider splitting the cost with friends.

Aldi is the only supermarket we've seen to be selling a bottle of Prosecco this large, but it comes at a price.

It'll set you back a hefty £79.99, which is the equivalent of paying £9.99 a bottle.

Plus, as you can pick up bottles of Prosecco for as little as £5.29 at Aldi, the six litre Methuselah Prosecco might not be the best value option if you want to stock up on fizz this Christmas.

Julie Ashfield, managing director of buying at Aldi UK, said: “Christmas is a time when we know our shoppers come together with their friends and family to share a quality glass of fizz.

"As ever, sparkling wine is incredibly important in the run up to the festive season, so we wanted to give them something bigger and better than ever!"

Aldi says it now sells a whopping 3,300 bottles of Prosecco each day.

The discounter's wine range has won over 150 medals from international awarding bodies, including 20 medals for its sparkling wine range.

When the Sun road-tested the giant Prosecco bottles back in September, we found they were so huge they wouldn't even fit in a normal fridge!

The budget supermarket has recommended you store it outside or in a garage to keep it cold.

Aldi is also selling a three-litre jeroboam for £39.99, which holds six regular bottles, if you want a smaller bottle.

You can also get a 1.5 litre magnum, which contains the equivalent of two regular bottles, for £13.99.

Aldi's popular Kevin the Carrot Christmas adverts are back this year. Watch Kevin battle the rotten parsnip here.

The discounter also has a new online toy store that is a great, affordable option for parents who don't have the time to pop by a physical store.

It is also is selling Christmas must-have toys Hatchimals for the first time – with some costing less than £2.50.
