5 new books you won’t want to miss this week: Mitch Albom, Ellie Kemper, Markus Zusak

1. “The Next Person You Meet in Heaven” by Mitch Albom (Harper, fiction, on sale Oct. 9)

What it’s about: In this sequel, Eddie reunites with Annie, the little girl he saved at an amusement park in “The Five People You Meet in Heaven.”

The buzz: 2003’s “Five People” hit No. 1 on USA TODAY’s Best-Selling Books list.

2. “My Squirrel Days” by Ellie Kemper (Scribner, nonfiction, on sale Oct. 9)

What it’s about: The star of “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” writes a humorous memoir.

The buzz: “Kimmy Schmidt” returns to Netflix on Jan. 25 for its final six episodes.

3. “Killing the S.S.: The Hunt for the Worst War Criminals in History” by Bill O’Reilly and Martin Dugard (Henry Holt, nonfiction, on sale Oct. 9)

What it’s about: Documents the hunt for Hitler henchmen who, after World War II, fled to South America, including Adolf Eichmann, Josef Mengele and Klaus Barbie.

The buzz: The seven previous books in O’Reilly’s “Killing” history series have hit either No. 1, 2 or 3 on USA TODAY’s Best-Selling Books list.

4. “Bridge of Clay” by Markus Zusak (Knopf Books for Young Readers, fiction, on sale Oct. 9)

What it’s about: The story of five brothers whose father disappears; for ages 14 and up.

The buzz: Zusak’s international best-seller “The Book Thief” is one of 100 titles vying to be “America’s Best-Loved Novel” on the PBS series “The Great American Read.”

5. “The Clockmaker’s Daughter” by Kate Morton (Atria, fiction, on sale Oct. 9)

What it’s about: A young London archivist who opens a satchel containing a photo of a Victorian-era woman and a drawing of an old twin-gabled house finds herself drawn to ghosts of the past.

The buzz: It’s an Indie Next pick of independent booksellers, and Publishers Weekly calls it “outstanding, bittersweet.”
