10 of the best films you might’ve missed this year (but can stream right now)

Some of the greatest films this year were also the biggest, including box-office hits “Black Panther” and “A Star Is Born.” But what those movies had in vibranium and vibrato, others made up for in sheer originality.

For one reason or another, these audacious, emotional and sometimes downright freaky films flew under the radar of mainstream audiences these past 12 months. Thankfully, all are now available to buy, rent or stream at home, giving you the perfect opportunity to catch up with them over the holidays.

‘Annihilation’

We can’t and won’t shut up about this deeply strange and surreal sci-fi masterpiece, which came and went from theaters faster than people are killed off in the “Shimmer.” Natalie Portman stars as grieving biologist Lena, who ventures into the mysterious, mutated swampland in search of clues about her husband’s disappearance there a year earlier. What starts as a creepy creature feature gradually morphs into a heady meditation on existence and self-destruction, with one of the most mind-blowing final sequences ever put to film.
