Serena Williams is a very, very wealthy woman. The tennis champion raked in $27 million in 2017, according to Forbes. And she’s worth an estimated $150 million. But the athletes daughter, 11-month-old Alexis Olympia, isn’t toddling around in couture.
“There was a designer dress that someone had sent for me to look at . . . it was a baby dress for 695 dollars. I said, ‘Excuse me?’ I was so shocked,” the 36-year-old told Us Weekly and other reporters at the Serena William and JP Morgan Chase Celebrate Working Moms event in New York City on Tuesday, August 21. The athlete, who shares her baby with husband Alexis Ohanian sent the frock back.
“We didn’t want this dress because we don’t want Olympia to feel that she needs money to value herself or she needs a dress that is expensive to feel good about herself,” Williams explained. “So after that we started ordering off Amazon and they look just as cute.” The 23-time Grand Slam champion noted that she is saving the Amazon purchases just in case they have another kid. “Some things are just too cute!” Williams gushed.
If Olympia had it her way, however, she would wear nothing at all. “She doesn’t like clothes after the bath so she runs around wearing nothing and that’s her way of drying off!” Williams cracked. “She doesn’t like to waste towels, she’s an environmentalist in that way.”
At the moment, Olympia is having a hard time with teething, while Williams admitted she is struggling to pencil in time for self-care. “I still haven’t gotten a pedicure. I realize I don’t want to get a manicure because I want to be with my baby,” the first-time mom revealed. She then recalled a conversation with her trainer Mackie Shilstone, in which he pointed out how on airplanes, adults are instructed to put oxygen masks on themselves — before a child’s. “I was constantly putting on her mask [first],” Williams said through tears. She now trying to put herself first every once in a while. “I love that advice,” Williams mused. “I think you should take it too.”
