Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith never plan to divorce, yet they won’t say they’re “married” anymore. What gives?

The rapper and Girl’s Trip star have been married for 20 years, have two successful kids together, and support one another’s dreams. Will recently disclosed on TIDAL’s Rap Radar podcast why the two no longer call themselves “married,” and it’s not why you’d expect.

“We refer to ourselves as life partners, where you get into that space where you realize you are literally with somebody for the rest of your life,” Will said. “There’s no deal breakers. There’s nothing she could do — ever. Nothing that would break our relationship. She has my support ’til death and it feels so good to get to that space.”

So how does a couple get to “that space?” We explored the timeline of Will and Jada’s relationship to pinpoint how they became true, head-over-heels in love life partners.

They didn’t ignore their chemistry

Will and Jada met in 1994 when Jada auditioned to play Will’s girlfriend on his hit sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. While she didn’t land the role of on-screen girlfriend, the two immediately started dating in real life.

“I really think that Will and I just have amazing chemistry on a lot of different levels,” Jada told Watch What Happens Live in 2017. “We love to laugh together. We love to learn together and we just love each other. We just have a good time together. I guess that’s the secret.” The two married two years after they met in a December 31, 1997 ceremony.

They grew together in their marriage

On the couple’s 20th wedding anniversary, Will disclosed how they became the strong couple they are today. “20 Years Ago Today we held hands and walked naively down that aisle,” he recognized in an Instagram post, before disclosing what he learned about marriage from Jada.

“Love is Like Gardening… I have learned to focus on HELPING you to BLOSSOM into what YOU want to be (into what you were born to be)… Rather than Demanding that you become what my Fragile Ego needs you to be.” He then summarized that to him, love means listening, giving, and freedom.

They put trust and their family above everything else

The couple didn’t become “life partners” by questioning each other’s every move. “You gotta trust who you’re with, and at the end of the day, I’m not here to be anybody’s watcher. I’m not his watcher. He’s a grown man. I trust that the man that Will is is a man of integrity,” Jada Pinkett Smith told Howard Stern on his show.

Will echoed Jada’s sentiments at a Vh1 event. “I’m not gonna be silly. I’m here to honor you.” Still, he referenced how they “made” their kids and the components it took to create their talented family: “It’s like you take Jada Pinkett Smith and an obscure town in Mexico and some tequila and you end up with great kids!”

Their open, trusting relationship has led to multiple rumors that the two cheat on one another when in reality they trust one another to a ridiculous degree that other couples just can’t seem to understand. In fact, Jada posted
