Feng shui is an ancient practice that ties the spaces we live in with the natural environment around us. It’s all about balancing your environment, which can affect our physical health, as well as our “yin” and “yang” or feminine and masculine energies.
And since we spend more time in our beds than anywhere else in the house, it makes a lot of sense to start this practice by aligning your bed with feng shui principles. While there is a preference for the direction your bed faces, it isn’t the most important element of feng shui in the bedroom. It is believed the bed should face south, primarily because of China’s climate, which would allow warm winds from the south to blow in through your windows. So, you might consider south-facing to be a lucky direction. Other than the direction, how the bed fits in your room is far more important for a feng shui bed that allows proper movement of your chi, or energy, flow (via Healthline).
How to place your bed for good feng shui
To practice good feng shui in the bedroom, here are some guidelines and what different bed positions signify. If you have a clear view of the door from your bed, this means you’re in a commanding position, which is optimal in feng shui. It should promote a feeling of safety and relaxation (via VeryWellMind). However, you want to avoid being in line with the door, or having your feet point toward it, when lying bed. This is known as the “coffin position,” and it puts you in the main path of traffic into and out of the bedroom.
The headboard should be against a solid wall that is not shared with the toilet if the bathroom is on the other side of the wall. And avoid placing the headboard against any windows, as “it can create a feeling of insecurity because it’s less safe,” certified feng shui consultant Anjie Cho told MindBodyGreen.
You should also leave around 18 inches of space on either side of a bed rather than place the bed in the corner of two walls, according to The Spruce. This allows plenty of room for balance among your yin and yang. Lastly, avoid placing the bed under any sloped ceilings or beams. These can cause you to feel increased pressure.
