The beloved story of The Very Hungry Caterpillar by renowned author Eric Carle has captivated kiddos for over 50 years, with over 50 million copies sold worldwide — and it was inspired by the simplest of objects: a hole punch.
“One day I was punching holes with a hole puncher into a stack of paper, and I thought of a bookworm and so I created a story called A Week with Willi the Worm,” Carle has stated. When his editor advised him that a green worm would be more well-received, Carle had the idea of making it a caterpillar instead. And, like the hungry protagonist in his most famous book, the story went through a metamorphosis to become the tale we know and love today.
