Being a mom can get overwhelming, especially around special holidays.

Padma Lakshmi shared that Halloween is a “sacred” holiday for her and her 9-year-old daughter, Krishna Lakshmi-Dell. Every year, they dress up in matching costumes, but Lakshmi had so much going on this time around that she couldn’t put forth the same energy.

“Halloween is sacred to us. An official mommy/daughter holiday. We always plot and plan our costumes together, just after Easter,” Lakshmi wrote on Instagram alongside a photo of her and her daughter who was dressed up as Harley Quinn. “This year was different. This year mom was lucky enough to get her new show made. This year mom was away a lot. This year mom was overwhelmed. This year mom is exhausted. I love Halloween. And, I’ve never not gone all out. But, I just didn’t get it together.⁣”

The “Top Chef” host, who got signed for her own show on Hulu, said that although she was able to put together Krishna’s costume, she didn’t have time to work on her own. She said she didn’t want her daughter to think she didn’t care, so she dressed up in a simple outfit.

“As moms we try to do it all and often put more pressure on ourselves than others. It’s been intensely stressful balancing it all lately. I even cried. More than once,” Lakshmi wrote. “Luckily I found this mask to hide behind.”

Halloween is sacred to us. An official mommy/daughter holiday. We always plot and plan our costumes together, just after Easter. Usually. ⁣ ⁣ This year was different. This year mom was lucky enough to get her new show made. This year mom was away a lot. This year mom was overwhelmed. This year mom is exhausted. I love Halloween. And, I’ve never not gone all out. But, I just didn’t get it together.⁣ ⁣ Luckily, I managed to save #littlehands’ situation by what I think is a really kick ass Harley Quinn, but I just didn’t get my own costume ready I had no energy. But I didn’t want her to feel I was chumping out and didn’t care enough to get dressed up for her. For our beloved yearly ritual. Something had to give. ⁣ ⁣ As moms we try to do it all and often put more pressure on ourselves than others. It’s been intensely stressful balancing it all lately. I even cried. More than once. Luckily I found this mask to hide behind. #momlife #halloween

Lakshmi’s followers appreciated her honesty and commented that they have struggled with what she’s going through.

“I relate so much to this post,” a fellow mom wrote. “The day before Halloween I was traveling for work and when I came home I was exhausted. Halloween day I have to wake up at 5 am to get my daughter’s makeup ready, drive her to school, go to work and then come back home to go trick or treating. … (Seeing) my kids smile energized me, I think that is what they called mommy power.”
