Melin Jones never knew an innocent cake mix-up would take the internet by storm — but here we are and we can’t stop laughing.
The Missouri mom picked up a pre-made cake on display at the her local Walmart, Jones told USA TODAY. She asked the worker behind the counter for what she thought was “pretty simple request:” Write “Happy Birthday Lizard” on top.
What ensued was a big miscommunication, shock and then hilarity.
Jones was getting the cake to celebrate the second birthday of her daughter Elizabeth — who she’s lovingly called “Lizard” since she was pregnant.
“She handed it back and I didn’t check it,” the 27-year-old mom shared. “I didn’t think to check it. We were in a hurry.”
Happy Birthday, Loser
When she got home and unloaded the car, she noticed the mistake. “Lizard” read “Loser.”
“I was pretty shocked. I didn’t know what to think at first. Then after the shock wore off, I couldn’t stop laughing,” Jones said.
She grabbed her phone to snap a photo of Elizabeth and the cake to send to her husband, and the result was epic.
“I didn’t tell her to look at (the cake). She can’t read. She doesn’t know what a loser is. She just happened to be making that facial expression when looking at the cake when I snapped the picture.”
She posted the photo that evening, but later removed it for fear that the Walmart worker would get in trouble.
‘Apparently it is funny to a lot of other people’
Luckily, she revived the photo in all its glory when she posted it recently to a “Sad Fails” Facebook group. People started asking for her to make it public so she did, Jones said. The post on her page has now been shared more than 2,600 times.
While she has received some backlash from people who didn’t know the backstory, Jones said most of the comments have been positive and she is taking all the attention in stride.
“It’s still pretty crazy to me,” she said. “Sometimes when funny things happen, you wonder if its funny to anyone else, but apparently it is funny to a lot of other people, which blows my mind.”
For the record, Jones went back to the Walmart and bought her daughter a new cake, this time asking for “Happy Birthday Elizabeth.”
This year, when Elizabeth turns 3 in September, mom said she plans to check the cake before leaving the store. “The pressure is on this year,” she joked.
