This TikTok Mom Taught Her Teenage Son a Very Important & Often Overlooked Lesson

Oh, the joys of parenting a teenager. There’s the barrage of “I hate you,” the undeniable attitude, and the intricate rules you are expected to follow on social media. One mom, Danielle Foster, just had a particularly frustrating teaching parenting moment with her teenage son. In a TikTok posted last week, Foster explained that her son had gone on his first date and he was proud that he tipped “a lot of money.”

And what does a teenager think is “a lot of money” for a good tip, you ask? For a $104 check, this teen tipped his server $10.

*face palm*

“ARE YOU KIDDING ME, JOHNNY?!” Foster yelled.

She insisted her son go get her wallet, find her Visa card, and go to the ATM.

“And you need to go grab a 20 [dollar bill] drive your ass back to that restaurant because on a $104 check, $10 is a sh*tty tip,” she said.

😑 legit he’s driving his ass back there im so sorry legit 😩 I raised him better than this 😑 #momsoftiktok #momofteens #coolmom #tippingservers #waiter #waitress #workfromhome #remotework #momof3 #workingmom

And she’s right. Even if $10 seems like a lot to Johnny, he needs to learn to tip more, especially with such a large bill. Johnny, dressed in a Philadelphia Eagles jersey over a gray sweatshirt, smiled uncomfortably as his mom continued.

“Do you understand me? Go now,” she said in the video. “I’m not asking. I’m telling.”

Foster told BuzzFeed that she insisted Johnny go through with this because when she was a 20-year-old single mom, she worked three jobs.

“Two of those jobs I was a waitress,” she said. “It was extremely hard work, and some days, I walked off an eight-hour shift with only $30.”

She continued to drive her point home, explaining to Johnny that this server might have kids, and so he needs to go back to the restaurant with a larger tip. “😑 legit he’s driving his a** back there im so sorry legit 😩 I raised him better than this 😑,” Foster captioned the TikTok.

“I want to see you hand it to him,” she said, implying that she would be FaceTiming with her son when he did it.

“I want to see you walk in, I will be muted,” she told the embarassed teen.

Viewers were so appreciative of Foster teaching her son to tip appropriately (let’s aim for at least 20%, people!) and singing her praises in the comments — because as important as this is, it’s a life lesson that we don’t often think to instill in our kids, and we totally should.

“OMG 33 years in the food service industry… THANK YOU FOR THISSSSSS😭😭😭😭😭😭😭,” one commenter said.

“The Mother the world needed 😭 11 years in the industry 🙋🏼‍♀️and we thank you!” said another.

“MOM OF THE YEAR 🥰”
