This Mother-Daughter Runway Appearance Was Epic

On Sept. 7, Denise Bidot, a top plus-size model, shared the runway at New York Fashion Week with her daughter, Joselyn, 11. And the mama-daughter catwalk strut for the Chromat brand’s 10th anniversary show was the very definition of empowerment.

The show featured designer Becca McCharen-Tran’s newest body-positive and body-inclusive collection (and a lively hip-hop atmosphere). We’re not surprised Bidot and her daughter were in the spotlight. Single mom Bidot has always been all in when it comes to women empowering other women, especially her daughter.

Bidot, according to her own website, smashed the rail-thin model stereotype in 2014 when she modeled for several designers (including Serena Williams’ HSN line) during the very high-profile New York Fashion Week. She also participated in the “Beach Body, Not Sorry” campaign by Swimsuits For All in 2015, which offered up untouched photos of models in swimwear — an almost scandalous level of no-filter nakedness in 2016.

On the occasion of the Chromat show with her daughter, Bidot told Romper, “From the moment [Joselyn] was born, I was modeling and I was like pushing for diversity and inclusivity and representation.” She added, “She’s grown up with nothing but body positivity. It’s been her entire life.”

Here’s Bidot and her daughter, in her Instagram tribute to Joselyn:

Bidot wrote, “Spent the last 24 hours trying to put this moment into words, but I don’t think words would ever due [sic] it justice. So I’ll just say this… As a single mom, there’s been a lot behind the scenes that people never see to make my dreams a reality. I knew the moment I had my daughter that I had to fight even harder to show her that anything is possible.”

She continued, “I knew I was deserving of my dreams even if I was a mom and even if the world continued to try and tell us otherwise. But here we are, in 2019, walking a [New York Fashion Week] show TOGETHER and living out best lives ever! Never in my wildest dreams did I see this one coming… This was one for the books.”

She ended with a message to her daughter: “And to @justmejoselyn, you slayed that runway, queen, and I’m so proud of the young lady you’ve become. I can’t wait to see how you change the world.”

Joselyn clearly adores and looks up to her mama, as you can see by her own Instagram tribute on Mother’s Day. We seriously love this mother-daughter duo — and we can’t wait to see what fierce, fabulous collaborations they have in store for us in the future.
