It’s no secret that Prince William and Kate Middleton are close with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. Despite their relationship, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex weren’t named Prince Louis’ godparents.
In the United States, it’s not uncommon for a close family member to be a child’s godparent. However, they do things a little different across the pond. In England, godparents are typically close friends of the parents — not their siblings or in-laws — and the royal family usually follows suit with the tradition.
That said, selecting godparents might be the only thing the royal family has in common with British citizens. From the venue to the christening gown, Prince Louis’ baptism was nothing short of regal. We uncover details from the event, plus who Prince Louis’ godparents are, ahead.

Prince Louis’ christening
Much like his siblings, Prince Louis’ christening was a day to remember. Prince William and Kate Middleton celebrated their youngest child with a baptism at the Chapel Royal at St. James’s Palace in London. Accompanied by Prince Charles, Camilla Parker Bowles, Prince Harry, Meghan Markle, and others close to the royals.
The young prince wore the same christening gown as his older brother and sister. According to Kensington Palace, the dress is “a handmade replica of the Royal Christening Robe” and was designed by the queen’s dressmaker, Angela Kelly. The original gown was made in 1841 for Queen Victoria’s oldest daughter and featured “fine Honiton lace lined with white satin,” said the palace.
Kate Middleton introduced a sleeping Prince Louis — who was born April 23, 2018 — to the Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby. Upon the introduction, the duchess joked “I hope he stays like this.”

Uncle Prince Harry gave Prince Louis quite the christening gift. According to The Sun, the Duke of Sussex gifted his nephew a first edition Winnie-The-Pooh book. At the time of its first print — in 1926 — only 30,000 A. A. Milne books were printed. The gift is believed to be worth around $10,000.
While some of the christening celebration details have yet to be revealed, it is likely that the royal family — and their friends — enjoyed a slice of Prince William’s and Kate Middleton’s royal wedding cake after the baptism. According to tradition, royal couples often save cake tiers for their children’s’ christenings. Rumor has it, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge saved three tiers of their famous fruit cake — two of which were enjoyed at Prince George’s and Princess Charlotte’s baptisms.
