Pretty Little Liars star Shay Mitchell exploded the internet recently with the big news she’s pregnant (spoiler: it’s a girl). She also just revealed on her YouTube series, Almost Ready, that she’s still not fully recovered from the heartbreaking loss of a prior pregnancy in 2018, stunning fans who had no idea the actor had suffered a miscarriage.
Mitchell is known for being incredibly private on social media — having kept her three-year relationship with Matte Babel, a music reporter, out of the public eye for much of their courtship. She also kept the news of her current pregnancy hidden for two trimesters before posting a belly pic on Instagram with the caption, “Does this mean I’m allowed to drive in the car pool lane at all times now?”

In Almost Ready‘s Episode 1, Mitchell revealed her reasoning for waiting to reveal her current pregnancy with Babel: “I chose to hold on until I announced [it] because of the first time… It didn’t go as I had hoped for, and [the miscarriage] was extremely difficult,” she said in the video. “When it happened I was just completely blindsided by it. I still have those photos on my phone. I still have all the doctor visit [videos], and it’s weird because I haven’t looked at them, but it’s not like I forgot about that happening.”
Mitchell continued, “Of course, I’m like super happy, but I still feel for the one that I lost.”
Mitchell also showed in the video the room that will eventually be the new baby girl’s nursery — but she said she’s waiting until the last minute, just to be sure, to decorate for her.
The hiding of her current pregnancy until the second trimester took an obvious toll on Mitchell, who filmed herself in her car in tears. “This is the shitty side of being pregnant when no one knows, because you can’t go out to see anyone, you don’t want to see anyone,” she said, weeping. “…I don’t feel myself.”
This episode was happily followed up with a gender reveal episode involving two costumed Power Rangers — one pink and one blue — fighting in Mitchell and Babel’s pool (and, uh, nearly drowning). The pink one won the mock fight and slithered out of the pool into the couple’s arms — definitely a new gender reveal party in our book.
We’re thrilled for the couple and so impressed with Mitchell’s courage in speaking out about her pregnancy loss. Her candor only helps crush the stigma surrounding an experience that too many women can relate to.
