Family planning is a little different in the royal family. Throughout the years, royals have been expected to produce “an heir and a spare” — referring to a firstborn heir to the throne and another sibling to inherit the crown if something were to happen to the firstborn. Fans of Netflix’s The Crown have seen this played out in the royal family, and Prince Harry cheekily referenced it in his tell-all memoir, Spare. But in an effort to break from years of royal tradition, Prince William and Kate Middleton are reportedly not following this long-standing arrangement, and it’s nice to see!

When it comes to following royal protocol, Middleton is no stranger to doing things her own way. Especially when it comes to warm interactions with people, just like the late Princess Diana. So when one source dished on the way Middleton and her husband Prince William are “determined” about breaking one royal custom, it makes total sense!

The Prince and Princess of Wales, who are parents to Prince George, 9, Princess Charlotte, 8, and Prince Louis, 5, are “determined to break the heir and the spare cycle” for their little ones, commentator Kinsey Schofield told Daily Star recently.

“I don’t believe the word ‘spare’ has ever been uttered inside their home to describe one or more of their babies,” she added. “It is just not on their radar. They wanted to have a large loving family.”

Although Prince George may be second in line to the throne, Prince William and Princess Kate don’t treat their children any differently.

“William and Catherine are teaching their children about royal responsibilities through doing them,” Schofield told the outlet.

She added that the Princess of Wales “seems affectionate, supportive, and engaging as a mother.” And for Prince William, he is a big “softy” when it comes to his daughter.

“Between nicknames and sly smiles, William appears to be the biggest softy when it comes to his baby girl, Princess Charlotte. We’ve also seen his protective side – which is incredibly admirable,” she added.

Princess Kate also wants to make sure Prince George isn’t given any special treatment.

An insider told OK! Magazine last month, “Kate thinks it’s important for their family dynamic that George isn’t given special treatment,” the source said. “Charles has made his feelings known about George. And while Kate is open to giving George more roles, her stance is only if she signs off on it.”

They added, “To her, the king’s word is not final when it comes to her children. She’s been very clear about that. And if that starts a rift or even a full-out war, then so be it.”

Middleton is a fierce mama bear when it comes to how her kids are treated, and we can’t help but admire her all the more for it!
