We’ve been following Broadway actor Nick Cordero’s months-long battle with COVID-19 — as well as the emotional battle his family is fighting at the same time as they grapple with his illness being so touch-and-go. He’s already undergone a leg amputation, a lung infection, along with other extreme symptoms of the novel coronavirus, and he has been in the ICU for more than 70 days.
“I’ve been told a couple times that he won’t make it,” Cordero’s wife, fitness trainer Amanda Kloots, wrote on Instagram. “I’ve been told to say goodbye. I’ve been told it would take a miracle. Well, I have faith.”
But this week, a glimmer of happy news in an unimaginably tough time for the Kloots-Cordero family: Baby Elvis took his first steps! Cordero shared video of the moment on Instagram Tuesday, June 17, captioned enthusiastically, “We have a WALKER!!!!!”
“Ready? One… two… okay, walk to mama!” Kloots instructs 1-year-old Elvis in the clip, and kiddo is clearly a good listener because he proceeds to do just that.
Elvis turned one just last week, and Kloots spoke on her Instagram Story about her plans to celebrate without Elvis’ dad at home: “I’ll definitely be FaceTiming with Nick at some point. It breaks my heart that Nick can’t be there — I literally can’t even talk about it because it makes me so sad… I plan on FaceTiming so he can see Elvis. I’m trying to prepare myself for the emotional day of Elvis turning 1, but then [also] not having Nick there, knowing how much he’d want to be there. I think it’s going to be really hard.”
Of course, Elvis starting to walk is also a huge, emotional moment for the parents, and it’s tragic that his dad was unable to witness the milestone in person. But Kloots was able to see a strange, resonant symmetry between Elvis’ two birthdays, this year and last: She wrote on Instagram that after his birth last June, Elvis had to be rushed to the NICU “because there was fluid in his lungs. He stayed there for two nights and Nick and I visited him all day. We couldn’t stop staring at him and eventually holding him. The NICU nurses are INCREDIBLE! It is amazing to witness what they do. My two Cordero men: last June Elvis is in the NICU. This June Nick is in the ICU. These guys are really trying to take me down,” she concluded, with a laugh-cry emoji.
Yes, it sounds like the Cordero men may have a certain dark sense of humor. But it also sounds like they’re super strong — a family of fighters, equipped to overcome.
