New Mom Diane Kruger Wasn't Sure She Wanted Children for a 'Long Time': 'I Was Too Selfish'

Diane Kruger had her first child a little later in life — but she has no regrets.

The Welcome to Marwen actress, 42, opened up about parenthood in a cover story for the latest issue of Net-A-Porter‘s PORTER Edit, explaining that she didn’t really consider the idea until her mid-30s.

“I didn’t think I wanted children for a long time. I was too selfish,” says Kruger, who welcomed her first child, a daughter, with boyfriend Norman Reedus in the fall.

“But by the time I got to about 35, I thought, yes, I probably do want one. But then you have to wait for the right person to come along,” she recalls, adding elsewhere in the interview about becoming a mom, “I’m glad I waited.”

Kruger describes Reedus, 50, as “so calm” when it comes to parenting — attributing his skill set to the fact that The Walking Dead star was already a dad to 19-year-old son Mingus Lucien, his only child with ex Helena Christensen, before their baby girl arrived.

The pair, Kruger tells PORTER Edit, spent Christmas with Christensen and Mingus, who live in the same neighborhood as Kruger and Reedus. They also had plans to all celebrate Reedus’ 50th birthday together this month.

“He teaches me a lot [about parenting], because he’s done it before,” she praises her partner. “There’s definitely something to be said for being with someone who is doing it for the second time.”

Reedus and Kruger met while filming the 2015 movie Sky, in which Kruger’s character embarks on a journey of self-discovery after leaving her husband and getting involved with Reedus’ character. They promoted the film together at the Toronto International Film Festival before going public with their romance in March 2017.

Kruger has been married once before — to French director and actor Guillaume Canet, whom she split from in 2006 after five years of marriage — and says she would consider it again at this juncture in her life.

“Never say never,” says the National Treasure actress of tying the knot. “I would have a party. I’d like to wear a nice dress. But I’m not religious, so that aspect of marriage doesn’t mean anything to me.”

That being said, if Kruger marries again, it won’t have anything to do with money. “There’s obviously a financial security that comes with marriage, but I’m financially independent — I don’t need anyone for that,” she says.
