Mum who’s not washed her hair for 8 months says it’s never looked better

What’s the longest you can go without washing your hair before you start to feel like a human oil slick?

A day? Two days max? A week? A fortnight (lucky old you)?

Well, how about eight months….

We’ve all heard the theory that if you stop washing your hair, it eventually self-cleans.

While not having to wash your hair ever again sounds pretty dreamy, there’s that awkward period you need get through where your hair is, well, just grim.

But mum Virginia Tapp has pushed through it – and says her hair has never looked any better.

A devotee of the "no poo" movement, the 27-year-old writer of Bush Bambinos has not looked back since ditching shampoo, conditioner and artificial hair dyes eight months ago.

Not only that, but she’s no longer having hair cuts either.

As for why, Virginia reveals her motivation was largely to do with the environment.

"In a nutshell, I started doing this because I wanted to use less stuff on my body and send less stuff down the drain," Virginia writes on her blog .

"Isn’t it just a little bit strange that we have to use three different types of soap when we wash?" she asks.

It’s a valid question.

But didn’t she have to go through that icky phase?

Virginia says she saw no real change to her hair for six months, apart from some slight oiliness at the scalp, for which she used a homemade remedy.

"I scrubbed my scalp with one tablespoon of bicarb soda dissolved in a cup of warm water," she explains.

After doing this, Virginia noticed the oil had "completely gone".

To further prevent the hairs’ natural oils from being stripped, she followed it up with a banana and raw egg hair mask.

Since then, she has only washed her hair with warm water.

And she has no regrets whatsoever.

"If anything, I actually get less knots now. My hair is neither oily or dry. It doesn’t smell like Palmolive, but it doesn’t smell like sour milk either. It just smells like hair," she adds.
