Mum livid after phone call from ‘lunchbox police’ school over one unhealthy item

All parents want their little ones to eat a healthy, balanced diet, but it’s good to give them a treat every now and again too.

One mum was completely baffled when she got a phone call from her daughter’s new school, saying they wanted to have a word about her daughter’s lunchbox.

She shared her story on parenting forum Mumsnet, to vent about how annoyed she was.

She wrote: "Just had a phone call from school and asked if I could go in for a chat regarding [darling daughter’s] lunch."

The mum explained that her six-year-old daughter gets free school meals except Wednesdays, because that meal gives her an upset tummy, so she brings a packed lunch that day.

"I am irritated as the teacher has looked in [her] lunch bag this morning which I feel is out of order if I’m total honest.

"So the offending item which she has had the last few Wednesdays as there is 10 in a pack is a mini Pick Up Bar."

The mum said that as well as the biscuit, her daughter had a cheese and ham mini wrap with lettuce, cucumber and red onion in it, six cherry tomatoes, carrot sticks, hummus and grapes.

"I was a bit taken aback just now on the phone so didn’t say much at all, now I need to know what to say at by meeting this afternoon."

The mum added that she thought the school would have "more to worry about" than a fun size biscuit.

Other parents were outraged by the school’s behaviour, slamming it ridiculous when school dinners are rarely as healthy as that lunchbox.

One said: "Ask them what was on the pudding menu today".

Someone else said: "Most schools seem to have ridiculous packed lunch rules now that don’t seem to apply to the school dinners which they try to push you into taking up."

Another added: "Seems like a gigantic waste of everyone’s time. Her lunch sounds absolutely fine and normal."

A fourth said: "Seems silly to me, her lunchbox sounds healthy enough. Could it be to do with allergies? Does it have nuts in?"

The issue did not seem uncommon, as other mums said the school has called them over items in their kids’ packed lunches too – such as Jammy Dodgers biscuits.

Other parents didn’t understand why everyone was outraged about the school being firm on chocolate and sweets, when it’s only the interests of children’s health.
