Four Florida moms sent the 14 children between them off to the first day of school like many moms do — with a photo and a sign.
Only instead of their kids posing in the photo, it was the moms who lounged, cheered and chugged with giant wine goblets. The sign said, “First day of school 2019” and included the hashtag “Bye Felicia.”
Professional photographer Shawna Genua, of Wee Winks Photography, said she and the three other Minneola, Florida, moms and neighbors — Bridget Brown, Jennifer Patterson, and Robyn Kelly — wanted to give people a laugh.
The Facebook photo series captioned, “Happy first day of school!!! We’ll be juuuuuuust fine!!” shows the four women hoisting what looks like red wine and a colorful yellow doughnut box on the ground. They also tagged Ellen DeGeneres and Jimmy Fallon.
The moms have 18 kids total, ages 3 to 36, and 14 children in school.
“So imagine spending all summer with them… yea! Everyone else was posting sad photos,” Genua said. “While we were sad, too, we also celebrated! We wanted to do something different — to make people smile on a day they would normally be sad.”
The wine is actually fruit punch, Genua said.
It was a little too early to start swilling wine and Genua joked all moms are “sober by 3.”
The reaction has been mostly positive, although some people told them to get a job. Genua said all the moms are employed.
And the kids? Well, they were embarrassed about their moms’ staged photo at first.
“They thought we were ridiculous,” she said. “Now we are the ‘cool moms.'”
