“I felt lucky I got to take some time off [from acting]. Now I have two boys and it’s the best,” the director said on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, repeating, “It’s the best.”
When Jimmy Fallon said he “always saw” the Don Jon star being a dad, Gordon-Levitt thanked him and gushed, “That’s one of the sweetest things you could say about a person.”

The Los Angeles native went on to tell the Saturday Night Live alum, 45: “I saw you in that documentary about dads that Bryce Dallas Howard made, [Dads]. I’ve been wanting to tell you this ever since I saw it a few weeks ago. The question was, ‘What is a dad?’ And you were like, ‘A dad is …’ and you were looking for the right word, and you were like, ‘… a hero.’ I just about started crying when you said that, man. Thinking about that I’m someone’s dad now because I remember looking up to my dad in that exact same way.”
The Inception star is glad his two sons are at an age when he “still can” hug them, he added.
Gordon-Levitt and his wife, Tasha McCauley, welcomed their baby boys in 2015 and 2017, respectively, and have yet to share the little one’s names.
“My son, he’s just a baby, you know?” the Emmy winner explained during a Live! With Kelly and Ryan appearance after his eldest child’s arrival. “He hasn’t made the choice to be in the public eye, and that’s a choice that I would like him to be able to make when he’s older, when he can think about these kinds of things and make that decision for himself.”

He and McCauley have also kept their relationship out of the spotlight. In 2013, Gordon-Levitt wouldn’t name his then-girlfriend, but told Howard Stern she wasn’t “in show business.” The notoriously private couple wed in their home the following year.
