We can’t go to playgrounds or playdates. School is closed. Group sports are forbidden. And P.E. class is now a link to YouTube. How are young children supposed to remain active as we stay home to maintain social distancing? Reese Witherspoon and other parents have figured out one solution: Teach your kid to ride a bike.
In an Instagram Story Witherspoon posted on Tuesday, the actor-producer showed her youngest son, 7-year-old Tennessee James Toth, pedaling along on his two-wheeler with training wheels on the empty street behind her.
“Learning to ride a bike!” she exclaimed in her written caption.
In an earlier pic, the Little Fires Everywhere star posed with her dog and declared, “New dog walker/P.E. coach reporting for duty!”
Witherspoon is one of millions of parents taking on the extra task of educating our kids during this wild time. And she’s not the first to decide that this is the ideal time for one of those lessons to be in bike-riding. On our first weekend of social distancing, my husband and I finally got our 7-year-old to ride without his training wheels. The next day, as he zoomed around our local park — far from the playground structures, mind you — he found his best friend, who had also just learned how to do the same. Though we can’t have her over to our house and they can’t get too close to each other, we’re all delighted that those two can race side by side (and 6 feet apart).
It’s not too late to get a bike, if you’re inspired to do the same. Even in New York City, bicycle shops have been deemed essential businesses, so they should still be open to serve you. Or you can buy an inexpensive two-wheeler online from Walmart or Target. Even toddlers can get in on this new hobby, with a sweet new balance bike.
Considering how much screen time these kids are getting right now, we can’t recommend this highly enough.
