Laura Prepon Shares Her Mom Essentials, Including Wearing a Burp Cloth as a Shirt

I have loved Laura Prepon since I first saw her as my fellow 5’10″er Donna having #tallgirlproblems and still kicking ass on That ’70s Show when I was in middle school. Then, with the passing of years and the advent of 21st-century TV gem Orange is the New Black, I fell in love even more. And now that Prepon has added “mom” and “author” to her ever-growing multi-hyphenate list (thanks to her toddler daughter and newborn son, plus her new book, You & I As Mothers, out today), I have to admit I find myself asking: Is there anything Laura can’t do?

Well, she can’t read a book in less than three months, apparently (same, girl, same); Prepon told us she’s knee-deep in pal Amber Tamblyn’s memoir, which she also posted about reading back in January. Hey, we get it, and Prepon has been beyond busy, what with transitioning into social-distancing life amid a book launch and popping out an entire human; her baby son, her second child with husband Ben Foster, was born in February 2020. And while she did take a (short) maternity leave, it seems Prepon is back in action already, working to promote her book (and the cute tote that comes with it) as well as advocating for those helping healthcare workers on the front lines of the pandemic — while also, you know, breast pumping and momming and generally miraculously keeping her shit together.

So yeah, basically there’s nothing Laura can’t do. We checked in with her on this auspicious book launch day to get her top picks for the products, podcast, snacks and more that are helping keep her (and her kids) sane right now.

These days have been challenging for all of us. Raising a toddler and a newborn in New York during these unprecedented times is tough. To help with self-isolation, I’ve been trying to find ways to feel more connected while sticking with a routine. @peanut has become a big part of that. @Peanut is an app to find support, get advice and share stories about motherhood. It’s really refreshing to be a part of a community of moms who are sharing advice and information. You can start your own thread with a question or concern and then get valuable advice – or check out the existing conversations women are already having. I found one about how NYC moms are keeping their kids active and connected to nature while stuck inside, which I really appreciated. I’ve been feeling overwhelmed lately, but to know I’m not the only one feeling this way has been really comforting. Having community is more important than ever right now, so I encourage you to join and stay connected. I’ve shared a download link my in bio, I’m excited to hear what you think! #peanutapp . #sponsored #ad

The podcast I’m listening to nonstop

“I really love Master Class. And while it’s not a podcast, I listen to it like it’s a podcast. Before social distancing, I would listen to classes while I walk around to my appointments in New York City. Now with social distancing and staying at home, I listen to it while I do things like laundry, cleaning, cooking, getting things prepared, etc. I love multi-tasking so the fact that I can learn while doing other things feels great and inspiring.”

The books my kids are currently obsessed with

“My newborn is only a month old, but my daughter (a toddler) is currently obsessed with The Sound of Silence, which reminds us all that silence in a noisy world comes from within.”

The books I’m reading myself

“I’m currently reading my dear friend Amber Tamblyn’s book, Era of Ignition. It’s part memoir, part cultural exploration of what women are facing in current times. She’s on the front lines of making the world better for women.”

The snacks I always have on hand for my kids

“We really like Ancient Nutrition bone broth protein powder. I try to infuse bone broth into our food whenever I can for its healing and replenishing nutrients. I make my own broth and cook with it all the time, but for smoothies this protein powder is a favorite in our home.”

The beauty product I always keep in my bag

“Dr. Bronners Naked Organic lip balm. With really long winters in NY and always having heat on, the air can be dry. I find that I reach for this lip balm a lot. I have it in multiple places around the house and always in my purse.”

The app that makes my life as a parent easier

“A good weather app! Because the weather dictates the day’s activities for my kids. Currently I’m using WeatherBug.”

The parenting accounts I love to follow on Instagram

“I really like Weelicious because the posts are fun and give easy family-friendly ideas. I also like how it’s executed with whimsy. It makes you feel good when you look at it. I also love following my friend Daphne Oz. She’s always posting about some cool piece of mom-fashion she’s found, things to do with her kids and mom hacks.”

The toys that keep my kids occupied for hours

“My daughter loves her Melissa and Doug art easel. It’s a large chalkboard as well as you can clip paper to it and paint.”

The TV shows I actually enjoy watching with my kids

“My daughter really loves watching Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood. I like it because it teaches lessons about feelings and situations ,much like how Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood would, but it’s geared towards younger children. She sings the songs from the show and they are always stuck in our heads, too.”

The kid-friendly music I don’t hate playing around the house

“Usually its Waylon Jennings.”

The best subscriptions I have for the kids

“Wipes!”

My favorite under-the-radar kids brands

“We really like Mini Mioche. They make their clothes with organic cotton and are beautifully designed. Plus, they are really cool! My kids are definitely more stylish than I am.”

How I keep my mom wardrobe on point

“Currently Im wearing a Margaux and May organic cotton muslin as a cape/burp cloth/halter top with exercise pants! I love their prints. With a newborn, that’s about as stylish as my wardrobe gets these days!”
