Kate Middleton Dropped a Major Hint About Who the 'Fun Parent' Is in the Royal Family

There are certain roles every parent has to fill, and the Prince and Princess of Wales are no exception. If you’ve seen the way Princess Kate calmy but sternly directs her kids (especially 5-year-old Prince Louis!) in public, then you might tend to think that she is the stricter parent. Apparently, this is not the case.

According to a video shared by Sky News, the Prince and Princess of Wales hosted a Buckingham Palace garden party in May after King Charles’ and Queen Camilla’s coronation. While mingling with guests, Princess Kate talked with an elderly woman about jokes.

“I’m terrible. I’m terrible at jokes,” Princess Kate said, adding that Prince William “is very good.”

Later, the woman told Middleton, “You’re the strict one.” She reacted with an open-mouthed surprise and said, “No.”

“I’m definitely not strict!” Princess Kate laughed. “How can you tell that? Surely not!”

It seems like Prince William may be the strict one at home then, making Middleton the fun parent in the family!

  • Kate Middleton Reportedly Has a ‘Revolutionary’ Way of Parenting

Royal expert Jennie Bond recently told OK! that Middleton has a “revolutionary” way of parenting Prince George, 10, Princess Charlotte, 8, and Prince Louis that is focused on “mutual respect, understanding, and patience.”

She said this method “is about letting them express those emotions and sitting down to discuss them with the child, rather than ignoring the turmoil that growing up so often involves.” We love this! It’s all about kindness and empathy, and we know Princess Diana would have been proud.

“It is fantastic and I believe Catherine will very much be the leader in this and William will be the follower, he will have been learning from Catherine how to be a different kind of parent,” Bond continued. “[Catherine] explains [to their children] why good manners are important and that kindness begets kindness and that inclusivity should be natural.” And since she admits to not being too strict, she must model these behaviors at home for her kids.

Last month, a palace insider told PEOPLE that Middleton brings a “stabilizing normality” to their home life.

“Those children look pretty happy with life,” the insider shared. “A lot of it is the stabilizing normality Kate brings — and that’s how she grew up. William absolutely loves it.”

The source added, “Coming from a different background, she appreciates the
importance of having family time. She wasn’t brought up in that aristocratic setting where you see the children for a short time each day.”

It’s clearly paying off, as she has some adorable — and kind — kids!
