Kate Gosselin Explains Why Reality TV Has Been Good for Her Children

No regrets! Kate Gosselin’s eight children have been featured on reality shows for “10 years and counting,” and the Kate Plus Date star thinks the experience has been good for them.

“Based on my kids and how well-adjusted and intelligent [they are] and how well they’re doing in school and overall in life, I feel like, more than anything, it has enriched their lives,” the reality star, 43, said at the 2019 Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour on Tuesday, February 12. “It has made them world-wise and taught them a lot about people’s intentions … more so than other kids their age.”

When it comes to continuing their careers in reality TV, Kate said that her 18-year old twins, Mady and Cara, and 14-year-old sextuplets, Hannah, Collin, Leah, Alexis, Joel and Aaden, can choose their jobs “whether it be filming our show or working at the local fast-food restaurant.”

Gosselin added: “They’ve turned out great, and they are very, very supportive of this, and it’s opened up so many opportunities for our family. … It’s been, essentially, a family business and it’s allowed me to work with my kids kind of in and out of frame. Everything has goods and bads … [and] the goods overwhelmingly outweigh the bad.”

Her brood first appeared on TLC in 2007 for Jon and Kate Plus 8, which was renamed Kate Plus 8 after the reality star split from husband Jon Gosselin in 2009.

The TV personality said at the TCA event that she believes her family’s time in front of the camera has always been authentic.

“We live our real lives and that’s filmed, and anyone who has worked with us knows that we don’t do redos [or] retakes,” she said. “We do not have scripted lines. Dear God, I can’t even get them to do their homework sometimes, so there’s no way they’re going to spit out lines.”

Kate appeared on stage with Mady and Cara. Their outing came one week after Jon, 41, claimed his ex-wife had “zero” contact with their son Collin since she lost custody of him in December. Collin now lives with his dad and sister Hannah.
