Inside Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s relationship with her granddaughter

Even if you’ve seen RBG or On the Basis of Sex, you might not know much about Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s relationship with her granddaughter Clara Spera. Turns out, it’s surprisingly normal and relatable. Well, mostly. While it’s true that people now give her grandmother standing ovations to the soundtrack of The Notorious B.I.G. and stop her on the street to ask for hugs, the pair still enjoy going to the movies and taking in Broadway shows together (via Glamour).

Of course, Justice Ginsburg’s influence on her granddaughter extends beyond just these interactions. For instance, Spera’s third birthday was held at the Supreme Court only two months after Justice Ginsburg was sworn in, not to show off, but (in Spera’s words) “because she wanted me to know, from the age of three, that my grandmother, my Bubbie, worked there, and that I shouldn’t consider anything out of my reach.” (via Above The Law)

Her granddaughter is following in RBG's footsteps

Justice Ginsburg has been a major influence in Spera’s life, as evidenced by the fact that Spera has started to take after her grandmother in more ways than one. For instance, in 2018 she was officially sworn in as a lawyer in the state of New York, and she now holds a position as an Equal Justice Works Fellow at the ACLU Reproductive Freedom Project, according to LinkedIn. Since becoming an attorney, Spera has continued to shown her passionate support for social justice causes like the #MeToo movement (also supported by Justice Ginsburg) and for equality in general (via CNN).

However, even in the context of all of these professional similarities, what stands out when Spera speaks about her grandmother is their strong familial bond, as she explained in Glamour: “You may know her as Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, or affectionately as the Notorious RBG, but to me she’s Bubbie. Bubbie with whom I spend most High Holy Days. Bubbie who took me to see The Book of Mormon, where we both laughed until we cried. Bubbie who loves going to the movies. Bubbie at whom I get a kick out of poking fun. Just a Bubbie like any other.”
