Inside Jeremiah Brent's New Pottery Barn Nursery Collection Inspired by His Kids Poppy and Oskar

“It’s a big deal to me as a gay father,” says Brent — who’s dad to daughter Poppy and son Oskar (with husband Nate Berkus) — about his new gender-neutral nursery collaboration with Pottery Barn Kids. “I never thought that I’d have the chance to create a collection like this.”

Largely inspired by Poppy and Oskar, Brent’s latest project also includes sentimental tributes to his and Berkus’ late loved ones.

“It is an emotional connection because each of these things represent an experience that I’ve had as a parent and what helps me navigate this chapter of parenting,” he says. “I’m really proud of my partnership with Pottery Barn Kids. They’ve been great, and I honestly couldn’t have dreamt it better. It’s the perfect example of the real true intention of how much creating a space reflects your story and provides people a soft place to land.”

“When Nate and I got married, instead of flowers we had these quartz and rock crystals everywhere. They’re in our home and have followed us,” says Brent about the inspiration for his crystal table lamp.

“When we were doing this, I thought, well, we need to create something to kind of bring in that natural element … those healing properties and positive energy. The nightlight is really beautiful because it can be as bright as you need. If you’re stumbling around the middle of the night looking for a bottle, it can be a light glow.”

“Ours is in our playroom currently. It was in a nursery,” he says about the nursery glider. “It’s sophisticated, it’s durable — and you can lay your head on it because there’s nothing worse than those late nights and not being comfortable in a chair.”

Brent’s safari toddler quilt includes the Joshua Tree in honor of Berkus’ late partner Fernando Oskar Bengoechea, who died in the Asia tsunami in 2004.

“I actually showed it to Nate for the first time a couple of weeks ago, and it got really emotional,” says Brent. “We have beautiful woven pictures of the Joshua Tree all over our house, and our son is also named after Nate’s late partner. It’s so sweet to see [the blanket] drape over our crib.”

“That’s for Poppy! Elephants have always been her connection to nature,” says Brent about the adorable rocker. “I sketched it out and showed her the fabric and asked her what would be more comfortable.”

“When my grandmother was alive, she always had hummingbirds around her. Then when she passed, I started seeing them everywhere,” says Brent, who designed a hummingbird mobile and blanket for the collection. “There’s something really poetic to me about the hummingbird and being a new parent. It looks so calm and relaxed, but they’re moving a million miles an hour.”

Brent wanted to design a diaper bag that could easily transition into a work tote.

“Everything in this collection. I don’t want you to feel like you’re buying it for a limited time,” he says. Inside the bag, there are multiple compartments — and a changing pad.

“That was my answer to finding a way for the parents that are on the go, and life happens with the little one,” he says.

“They’re all organic, soft, plush, just really cute and playful,” says Brent about his bath wraps that come in a variety of animal designs.

“We have this game at my house every night where we wrap the towel around our heads into [animal shapes],” he says. “These towels with the hood exist, but these are a way to introduce again something that was important to our family into this collection.”
