'If It Doesn't Hurt the First Time, I'll Keep Popping Them Out': Everything Pregnant Katy Perry Has Said About Motherhood

Surprise! Katy Perry confirmed her pregnancy on March 4 after dropping the music video for her new song “Never Worn White,” debuting her baby bump at the very end.

“I’m late,” the singer, 35, said after promising she’d be on Instagram Live after the video dropped. “But you already knew that.” She revealed that it’s “probably the longest secret” she has “ever had to keep” and that she’s due in the summer.

“We’re happy and excited,” the singer said of her and fiancé Orlando Bloom’s reaction to the pregnancy. The pair, who have been on-and-off since 2016, got engaged on Valentine’s Day 2019.

“Omg so glad I don’t have to suck it in anymore,” she joked on Twitter of no longer needing to find creative ways to hide her growing baby bump. “Or carry around a big purse lol.”

One day after announcing her pregnancy, the singer told SiriusXM’s Mikey Piff that she and Bloom had been planning to expand their family. “It wasn’t an accident,” she said. “I’ve just been trying to create this space in my own life where I’m not running myself too ragged and creating space for something new to pop in like this.”

Perry added that both she and Bloom have been “looking forward to this new interval of life and sharing this.”

While this will be Perry’s first child, Bloom is already father to 9-year-old son Flynn, whom he shares with ex-wife Miranda Kerr. Perry opened up on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in September 2019 about how the responsibilities that come along with childcare have already “matured” her.

“We have to be out the door at 7:30 to be there at 8:15 and we cannot be late,” she explained, seemingly referring to picking up Flynn from Kerr’s house. “I used to not wake up until 11 a.m. and now I’m in bed like a normal person at 10 p.m., just like falling asleep.”

Reflecting on the change, she continued, “I guess this has definitely matured me. I guess this is adulting. That’s why I still dress like a child, to fight against!”

In September 2019, Bloom stopped by Howard Stern’s radio show and opened up about his and his fiancée’s plans to expand their family.

“I love kids. She’s great with kids,” the actor told Stern of the singer. “It would be a wonderful thing. We are shooting for that.”

Bloom added that Perry already “has a great relationship to my son [Flynn]. I mean she’s like a kid so she’s unbelievable to kids.”

After helping to deliver two of her older sister’s children, Perry spoke to E! News about having babies on the brain in October 2016.

“I see the amazing thing of birth and children and the vulnerability and we just have to take care of them and how, how big of an impression we have. We have such a responsibility!”

She added, “Children to me are becoming a big focus. I don’t even have mine but I see it in my sister’s kids and just how much nurturing and love they need.”

Chatting with ELLE in 2015, Perry spoke candidly about being pulled in and out of school growing up, and how she is determined to provide a more stable education for her future children.

“Unfortunately, I come from an uneducated background. I was taken out of school all the time. Homeschooled,” she told the outlet. “Put in schools that didn’t have any checks and balances, that were based on making sure that kids were sheltered in a Christian atmosphere — never about education.”

“I didn’t go to high school, didn’t go to college,” she continued. “But I grew up with a lot of things that I’ve had to let go, rework, reroute, rechange. I will definitely make sure my children have all of the tools to have a fantastic education. So I will stop that in my generation now.”

Speaking to The Daily Telegraph in May 2015, the singer said, “I’m still growing up, I’m still learning about myself. When I become a mother I just want to become a mother and be dedicated to that.”

In her August 2014 Rolling Stone cover story, the “I Kissed a Girl” singer opened up about wanting children — but not right then.

“I want to be doing that in the right time,” she said. “And that’s not in the next two years, you know? Maybe it’s in a five-year plan, but I need to really be able to focus 100 percent of my attention on it. I don’t really want to take the child on tour. Not until, like, birth through five is over.”

Having not yet been involved with now-fiancé Bloom, the pop star added that she would be open to having a baby on her own. “I don’t need a dude … It’s 2014! We are living in the future; we don’t need anything. I don’t think I’ll have to, but we’ll see. I’m not anti-men. I love men. But there is an option if someone doesn’t present himself.”

While dating John Mayer, Perry spoke to Marie Claire in December 2013 about the possibility of having kids. “I’m definitely not there yet, and I can’t plan that far in advance.” She continued, “When I decide to have a family, I’ll just want to be Mom for a little bit.”

Speaking about her ex Russell Brand in her Marie Claire cover story, she shared that he “really wanted me to have children, and I knew I wasn’t ready.”

“I think it was a way of control. I think it was part of, ‘If I have a kid, then I would have to sacrifice — I’d have to be home more.’ I really wanted to, but I knew I wasn’t ready for it.”

Perry told ELLE in 2011 that if her career hadn’t taken off when it did, she would have potentially looked to have children earlier.

“I had two cars repossessed, and I was writing bad checks, but I gave myself a timeline. I thought, ‘Okay, if I don’t make it by 25, I’m just going to get married and pop out some babies and do some crafts.’ ”

Lucky for her fans, the star’s breakout hit “I Kissed a Girl” hit the charts and propelled her to stardom when she was 23.

“I think some people will die on the stage, and I’m not so sure I want to do that,” Perry added in her 2011 ELLE interview about her feelings on touring forever. “Like, I want to have kids! I’m totally fine with saying that. I think some people are scared because they’re worried it’s going to ruin their career, but I want to live a full life.”

She added, “I think you can have it all. You just have to work really hard, because great things don’t come easily.”

“I would love to have children. I think that’s one of the reasons you get married. Especially to the person that you marry,” Perry, who was married to Russell Brand at the time, told Ellen DeGeneres during an appearance on her talk show in November 2011. “You think, that person is going to be a good partner, a good parent,” she said, according to E! News.

“But I’m not sure it’s yet. We’ll see, ya know,” she added regarding the timing. When asked how many kids she’d want, the singer playfully replied: “If it doesn’t hurt the first time. I’ll keep popping them out.”

When rumors swirled that Perry was pregnant one year into her marriage with Brand, the pop star was quick to shut them down: “Hell, no!”

“I like In-N-Out Burger and Taco Bell and if you want to make that pregnant that’s your problem,” she quipped to The Insider. While she didn’t rule out having babies down the line, she joked there was one big reason why the timing wasn’t right: “I still love drinking alcohol so not yet.”

“Absolutely. I don’t want to miss out on any experience. I want lots of children. It’s all very possible,” she told Grazia magazine (via Daily Mail) in December 2010, two months after tying the knot with Russell Brand.
