The American bishop who delivered a moving sermon during Prince Harry and Meghan Markle‘s wedding ceremony has been battling prostate cancer, People reports.
Around the time of the royal wedding, Bishop Michael Bruce Curry discovered he had prostate cancer during a routine physical, according to People. He shared a letter with People prior to surgery. “I am happy to say that the prognosis looks very good and quite positive,” he said. Also, he found encouragement after speaking with a number of people who had prostate cancer, including his family. He anticipated surgery would keep him in the “hospital for at least a day, then at home to recuperate.”
Bishop Curry planned to take four to six weeks to recover and possibly return to work. So how is he doing today and what does prostate surgery and treatment typically involve?
What is the treatment for prostate cancer?
If cancer has not spread beyond the prostate gland, surgery is a common treatment, according to the American Cancer Society. The surgery called a radical prostatectomy is where the surgeon removes the prostate gland and surrounding tissues. The operation can be done through an incision in the lower abdomen or the perineum. In some cases, a laparoscopic radical prostatectomy is possible where the surgeon uses specific tools and only small incisions are necessary.
Prostate cancer, like most cancers, has four stages. Early stage treatment involves surgery and for some, radiation therapy. Later stage prostate cancer patients may also have chemotherapy.
Bishop Curry’s surgery went well
Bishop Curry underwent surgery on July 31 and the Episcopal Church Office of Public Affairs said he was resting comfortably. “According to the presiding bishop’s family and his medical team, the surgery went well, as had been expected. Bishop Curry is resting, and a full recovery continues to be anticipated.”
He was overwhelmed by the support and love
In a recent video, a visibly thinner, but healthy Bishop Curry offered thanks to the many people who sent cards and well wishes to him during his cancer journey. He said when he got home from the hospital, he and his wife spent several evenings reading the cards aloud to each other. “They were a blessing.”
“And as I listened to the cards and the messages and the words you sent,” he said. “And the prayers you offered, I kept feeling blessed.”
How is Bishop Curry today?
Following surgery, Bishop Curry shares a recent update on his health. “I came through the surgery very well. Everything is good,” he said in the video. “The pathology report was just fine, and I’m slowly but surely working my way back into the work I love to do.”
Also, he hinted at going back to work soon. “I’ve been recovering,” he said. “I pretty much stayed home and recuperated in August. Things are starting up slowly, but starting up.”
He’s already back at work
By early September, Bishop Curry was back at work, speaking at a sold-out dinner in Atlanta for the Day1 media ministry. He also recently spoke out against the Trump administration’s refugee ceiling of only 30,000 people for next year too.
“As followers of Jesus Christ, we are saddened by this decision,” he said in a release. “Our hearts and our prayers are with those thousands of refugees who, due to this decision, will not be able to find new life in the United States. This decision by the government does not reflect the care and compassion of Americans who welcome refugees in their communities every day. Our faith calls us to love God and love our neighbor, so we stand ready to help all those we can in any way we can.”
