Once the Game of Thrones show-runners had finished adapting A Dance With Dragons, they had no more source material from George RR Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire for the rest of the series’ narrative. The 70-year-old author is still writing The Winds of Winter and hasn’t even begun the final book in the series, A Dream of Spring. Heading into uncharted territory, Martin had to reluctantly tell David Benioff and Dan Weiss his planned major plot points for the last two books, including who would win the Iron Throne. And as fans know, Bran the Broken was elected King of Westeros at the end of Game of Thrones.
Now Bran star Isaac has confirmed, as suspected, that his character being crowned is how Martin still plans to end A Song of Ice and Fire.
Speaking with HBO, the 20-year-old said: “[Creators] David [Benioff] and Dan [Weiss] told me there were two things [author] George R.R. Martin had planned for Bran, and that was the Hodor revelation, and that he would be king.
“So that’s pretty special to be directly involved in something that is part of George’s vision.
“It was a really nice way to wrap it up.”
In fact, Isaac couldn’t believe it when he read the script, assuming it was a fake ending to avoid spoilers leaking.
He added: “I had to physically get up and walk around my flat. I said, ‘What?! You’re joking.’ It was the very last thing I expected to happen.
“I was convinced they had sent a script to everyone in which they become king or queen, so I still didn’t believe it until the read-through.”
However, Martin has previously confirmed that minor character’s endings may be different in the books.
On 60 Minutes, he said: “I don’t think [Game of Thrones show-runners] Dan and Dave’s ending is gonna be that different from my ending because of the conversations we did have.
“But there’s no way to get in all the detail, all the minor characters, all the secondary characters.
Perhaps Jorah will survive after all, since this was originally the plan for the scripts.
Game of Thrones writer Dave Hill confirmed he almost ended up at The Wall with Jon and Tormund.
