From Breast Milk in the Nose to Yoga with Kids: Gisele Bundchen's Natural Approach to Parenting

“My kids never got sick when I was breastfeeding,” Gisele Bündchen — mom to daughter Vivian Lake, 5½, and son Benjamin Rein, 8½, with husband Tom Brady — recently told PEOPLE.

“If they had something in their eyes, I’d put breast milk in their eyes,” she explained. “Before their flight, I would get a dropper and put milk up their nose … to [ward off] the bacteria on the plane.”

“There should be a worldwide law, in my opinion, that mothers should breastfeed their babies for six months,” Bündchen told Harper’s Bazaar U.K.

“Some people think they don’t have to breastfeed, and I think, ‘Are you going to give chemical food to your child, when they are so little?’ ” the 38-year-old supermodel added.

“As a mother, you’re always giving. It’s important to give something to yourself, so you can give from a place of being full, instead of giving from a place of being depleted, which isn’t healthy for you or for the family,” Bündchen told Vogue in 2017 about the importance of meditation.

Son Benjamin was born at home in warm water in a deep bathtub with the help of a midwife. “I wanted to experience the transformation,” the Lessons: My Path to a Meaningful Life author told Vogue in 2010.

“It was the most amazing experience of my life, feeling him come through my body,” she recalled. “And once he was born, I never felt so empowered as looking at him and thinking, ‘Oh, my God, we did it together!’ “

The mother of two previously told PEOPLE that her family has been “eating a more plant-based diet for years,” adding, “It’s not only good for our health and makes us feel good, but it is also good for the planet!”

“We are all pretty active at our home. We do some form of physical exercise every day; it all depends where we are,” Bündchen told PEOPLE of her family workouts.

“If it’s not cold, I love to exercise outside in nature. But  it’s cold a lot where we live, so I get to work pretty hard in the gym too!”

Bündchen’s sore-throat care is all natural. “I pour really cold milk onto a cloth, cover the outside of the cloth in plastic wrap and arrange it around [Vivian’s] throat,” she wrote in her book. “It’s a little stinky the next morning, but Vivi’s sore throats are usually gone — I have no idea why.”

“I love the Earth and every living being on it. I feel we are all so blessed we get to live on this beautiful planet,” Bündchen previously told PEOPLE.

She added, “No matter what country we are born in, the earth is the home we all share, so we should take care of it. In a way, we are all Earth trustees, and we need to make sure we leave it in a better place for future generations.”

The model revealed she had her son potty trained by 6 months old. Bündchen carried Benjamin around completely naked as part of a process called “elimination communication” or “natural infant hygiene,” which expedited her response to her son’s bathroom needs.
