Many fans were left shocked when Dwyane Wade, Gabrielle Union, and their family up and left Florida for another sunshine-clad state: California. Wade has hinted here and there why they all left, and was even straightforward about how they didn’t support the anti-LGBTQ+ legislation during an episode of the Showtime series Headliners. But his recent interview with People shows just how tragic it all was.

Wade told People that while they don’t “love the Sunshine State any less,” he and his family didn’t feel “safe” or “protected” there.

“It’s just not a place right now that my family and I feel protected, feel safe, feel seen, and I’m thankful that I’m able to speak out on it because I know there’s other families that feel the same way,” he said, adding that “the community that my daughter is a part of” is “represented in a way that we felt comfortable” in California.

The Dwyane author added, “When we had to decide what the next step was for our family as we were all coming together a little bit more, we had to think about our family and how it looked and how we wanted our kids to feel, what we want them to see on a daily basis.”

For those that don’t know, Wade’s daughter 16-year-old Zaya came out as transgender in 2020, and later, Dwyane sold their home when Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed the state’s “Don’t Say Gay” bill into law.

Union and Wade welcomed their daughter Kaavia, 4, via a surrogate back in Nov. 2018. Wade also has three children from previous relationships named Zaire, 21, Zaya, 16, and Xavier, 9. And the Union-Wade family is truly happy and thriving in California!
