DWTS’ Maksim Chmerkovskiy Knows Why Some Parents Are Unhappy

Maksim Chmerkovskiy was sound asleep when he felt a tap on his shoulder. The dancer’s wife, Peta Murgatroyd, was concerned about their 23-month-old son, Shai.

“Peta nudges me and says, ‘Hey, I think maybe his room is too cold,’” Chmerkovskiy told Us Weekly at a TheraGun event in Los Angeles on Monday, December 3. “And I’m like, ‘No, babe. He’s fine.’”

But then, the former Dancing With the Stars pro began to wonder whether the toddler was in fact chilly in his nursery. “I’m laying there with a blanket over me, I’m cuddled right up next to Peta. I have the body heat and I’m like, ‘He’s not sleeping with a blanket. F—k.’” Seconds later, the “half-asleep” dad was in Shai’s room assessing the situation because as he explained to Us, it “was the right thing to do.”

Though Chmerkovskiy’s happiest moments are with Shai and Murgatroyd, he needs time for himself too. “You can’t be an unhappy person because you’ve literally just given up everything that you are up until now, cold turkey,” he explained to Us. “We don’t hand over the keys to our happy life once we become parents. It’s not imprisonment.”

Chmerkovskiy and Murgatroyd, 32, tied the knot (twice!) in July 2017 after dating for more than five years. And while the couple’s relationship is as solid as ever, they have not had much time for romance.

“You just have to give up a couple of years is what it is,” he said. “Life is putting us in a place where we just enjoy this miracle that’s that’s happening, this kid who is growing every single minute.”

Of course, Shai isn’t the only thing keeping Chmerkovskiy busy. The Ukraine native partnered with TheraGun to donate 300 units to disabled American veterans. (The neuromuscular device provides muscle activation and assists in recovery and pain relief.)

“I love this product,” Chmerkovskiy declared. “[It] makes your butt feel good when it’s sore. It’s something that wakes up muscles and reconnects them to your brain.”
