So many parents, celebrity and otherwise, are spending more time than ever before with their kids while we’re all hunkering down to slow the spread of coronavirus. But one famous dad has made the difficult decision to do the opposite. Music producer Diplo shared on social media that he’s isolating himself from his sons for the sake of his family’s safety, even though he doesn’t know if he is carrying the virus.
“My sons are too young to understand the complexities of what’s happening,” Diplo said of 10-year-old Lockett and 5-year-old Lazer in an Instagram post that heartbreakingly shows both boys putting their palms against their dad’s on the other side of a window. “But they aren’t anxious and nervous like the rest of us. They live in a house with their grandmother who is the most vulnerable. I have been in contact with hundreds of people in the past four weeks… And I’m staying away from the house until I am cleared of the virus.”
Such a measure may have sounded extreme just a week ago, but now we get it. Almost anyone could be carrying the virus now that it has reached pandemic status. Since symptoms may not show up for 14 days after exposure, according to the CDC, it’s very easy to keep on spreading it before you know you’ve got it. This is especially true since coronavirus testing in the U.S. is still so difficult to come by.
“This hurts because I miss them so much they are what makes me wake up every day and live and [breathe], they are my ultimate joy, but this is my sacrifice to make sure everyone around me is safe,” Diplo continued. “I haven’t had this much time home in years, and I wanted to build Legos and watch movies with them. But for now, I’m just going to stay by the window and listen to them play drums and sing for me.”
Watching a dad go through this hurts. Learning about parents who are suffering from coronavirus in an ICU and can’t see their kids and partners at all hurts even more. It’s enough to make us stop complaining about the discomfort of trying to entertain bored children home from school during this scary time.
While he’s in this self-imposed isolation, Diplo is still connecting with his fans. He streamed a set he dubbed “Corona Sabbath” on Youtube Friday night and another called “Coronight Fever” on Sunday. He urged fans to follow his example and stay home.
“Think about others in every decision you make in the coming weeks,” he wrote. “This isn’t a drill. We already have enough news from Italy Iran Korea and China about the best ways to slow this. We need to be smart, going out and interacting with groups is canceled, but kindness is not canceled, Love is not canceled, empathy is not canceled. Happiness is not canceled… Stay strong for the ones who can’t right now.”
He later took to his Instagram Stories to say that he has not tested positive for COVID-19 but said everyone should operate on the assumption that they have it.
“The minute everyone acts like that is the minute the clock starts to contain it,” he wrote. “We are very far from that moment still. And [until] then our lives will change.”
