Demi Lovato Slams Body-Shaming Article: ‘I Am More Than My Weight’

Demi Lovato preached body positivity to her Instagram followers on Friday, March 29, after the headline to a recent article said the pop star “appears to have a fuller figure.”

Lovato, 26, posted a screenshot of headline to her Instagram Stories, writing, “I AM MORE THAN MY WEIGHT.”

“Unlike the past, I’m not triggered, I’m not upset that someone wrote a headline about my ‘fuller figure,’” she added. “I’m angry that people think it’s okay to write headlines about people’s body shapes. Especially a woman who has been so open about being in recovery [for] an eating disorder. I’m not upset for myself but for anyone easily influenced by the diet culture.”

She continued: “Too many people today base their ideal body weight off of what OTHERS tell us we should look like or weigh. Articles like these only contribute to that toxic way of thinking. If you’re reading this: Don’t listen to negative diet culture talk. You are more than a number on a scale, and I am more than a headline about my body shape.”

The “Sorry Not Sorry” singer later posted a screenshot of her direct messages with the author of the article, who apologized and said he took “full responsibility” for the post. She wrote back: “I really respect you for the way you’re receiving this message. … Keep writing. Keep doing you. Most importantly use your platform for good.”

Lovato then publicly thanked the writer for “understanding where I’m coming,” adding, “Change is made [by] raising your voice, speaking your truth and spreading love and compassion, not hate.” She also asked her Lovatics to “be nice now,” writing, “I appreciate your support but he learned a lesson”

“Now my fuller ass is going to sleep!!” she quipped. “Goodnight guys. I love you so much. Don’t forget to tell yourself how beautiful and worthy you are of a happy and healthy life.”

Lovato has been candid with her fans about her battles with eating disorders and substance abuse over the years. After suffering a life-threatening relapse in July 2018, she marked what would have been her seven-year sober anniversary on March 15. “Grateful that AA/NA never shuts the door on you no matter how many times you have to start over,” she wrote that day. “I didn’t lose 6 years, I’ll always have that experience but now I just get to add to that time with a new journey and time count.”
